Can we just have a moment of silence for that cover?
I’m only a tiny bit ashamed to admit that man’s backside is partially responsible for me requesting this book from NetGalley. I mean, how can you not notice? It may be what got my attention but only until I read the summary and decided I MUST READ THIS NOW.
This story has everything you could ask for in a regency historical romance: notorious rogue, ruined society maiden outcast by her family and impropriety at its very best. All that goodness is swirled together and added to a very solid, intriguing mystery. I can’t tell you all the ways this book had me turning page after page to see what would happen next.
Ashlyn Macnamara creates very vivid, likable characters that invite you into their world to see just how their story will play out. I particularly enjoyed seeing a very strong female lead in Isabelle, despite her situation and vulnerability. While at first George seemed to be a rather typical rogue, another nice surprise was in finding out all the ways he really wasn’t. Neither the hero nor heroine in this tale was perfect – for me this was a hint that they just might be perfect for each other. You see growth and change in the depth of characters, and although the situation seems impossible, I found myself rooting for them to overcome all odds and find a way to be together.
One thing I realized after I’d started reading this story is that it’s a second book. By then I was too far in and couldn’t stop, but I do plan to read A Most Scandalous Proposal very soon. There are a few spoilers for that story in the second book, so if you prefer to learn things in order, be sure to read that one first.
RATING: BAD ASS HESSIAN BOOTS!!
