What a fun, sexy read! Taking A Chance starts out light and laid back; we don’t know our hero’s identity at first, just that within a few paragraphs he pretends to be someone else. I guess I can’t really blame him, since he acknowledges David to be the hottest guy he’s seen in a while. David’s waiting for a prearranged meeting with Timothy, someone he’s never seen or met in person, so the farce seems simple: pretend to be Timothy and enjoy dinner with a handsome stranger. Our hero is a model/actor, so how hard can it be to play this role? Except it ends up being a slightly different, more daring role than he first imagines. Timothy set up this meeting to explore his submissive side, and David’s the dom who’s agreed to teach him.
After finishing this book all I can say is wow, that ended up being so much more than I expected. I knew it was a short – only 11,500 words – but I’m amazed at just how much Anne Brooke gets across in those 11,500 words. She takes us from two strangers meeting, under false pretenses at that, to two guys making a real connection. Somehow without overtly stating facts she reveals who they are, and I felt like I really got to know them. The way “Timothy” internally debates or analyzes the situation, the way David cares for his sub, and the way they share an intimate encounter with such respect and almost reverence all reflect the type of people they are. That’s just to mention a few – there are so many more pieces revealed throughout the story.
Taking A Chance is categorized as romance, and once I saw the direction it was heading, I wasn’t sure how that was possible. I didn’t know how the BDSM angle was going to fit in, but it’s a dom/sub relationship without any hard core kink. Their experiences are intensely erotic and sensual; I think it’s probably once of the hottest stories I’ve read where there’s no actual intercourse. It’s not simply what’s happening on the page either – Brooke’s language kicks up the heat a couple notches. The way she describes each touch or caress along with their slow pace gives a sense of slowly building desire that is smoldering and nearly overwhelming. Once I saw how it all played out, it’s definitely romance. I’d love to see more encounters between these guys as their relationship grows and their Dom/sub relationship develops.
