ABOUT THE BOOK:
Dark forces, a vampire, plus one sexy cop is a recipe for trouble.
VINCENT KAMATEROS is no longer the lonely exiled vampire running a cupcake shop, but the heir to his father’s throne.
JOHN REEDER is out and accepts his vampire lover, but he has to deal with his lover being destined to rule the vampire kingdom.
While Vince and John revel in their newfound love, dark forces are at work in Orbus Arcana, determined to keep the progressive Vince from becoming the next vampire king.
Time is short and decisions loom. Their irrevocable choices will change their lives forever.
Okay, this book is a bit of a game changer. I’ve been wondering when Viki Lyn and Vina Grey would tackle all the tough questions that typically face vampire-human couples, and it appears this is it. There’s usually the matter of blending worlds, mortality and strength, and in this case, a few additional issues unique to John and Vince. All of it makes for a great story full of tension, excitement and romance.
While reading this book my overwhelming thought was Poor John. It seems that everything about what’s happening forces him to question and assess where he is in terms of his sexuality and his relationship with Vince. There are definitely some things about Vince’s life that could be deal breakers, and I enjoyed watching John work through those issues. John’s a guy who’s pretty tough on himself, so I liked his introspection and the decisions it leads him to make. I didn’t feel that anything was impulsive; Grey and Lyn definitely build a solid foundation for everything that happens. The consequences of his decisions aren’t without complications, so their road definitely isn’t easy. These are two guys who’re working hard to make sure they get their HEA.
I’ve said it in previous reviews, but one of my favorite things about romance is when a couple ceases to suffer the anxiety and insecurity about their relationship and begins to function as a unit. I feel like this is the book where John and Vince finally accomplish this. Yes, there’s a little bit of jealousy and uncertainty early on as Vince must select his personal guards and bond with them in an intimate ceremony, however once John realizes that it’s only a formality, he and Vince move past that. For me this is the next step in their relationship and demonstrates their mutual acceptance of the depth of their bond. Together they’re much stronger, because they’re no longer weakened by fear of losing the other. As a reader this is such a fantastic place to be; it’s like everything’s all sunshine and rainbows. Well, that’s if you ignore the other dangers lurking about, like people trying to kill them because, after all, this isn’t just a romance but also mystery. But we’re not going there, so for now, sunshine and rainbows.
Love’s Last Bite still predominantly focuses on John and Vince, but Lyn and Grey introduce a very intriguing side plot that almost steals the show for me: Jude Mikhail and Angelo. Holy cow. Whatever is going on between them, I need some answers, and I need them like yesterday. Please, please, please tell me there’s another book coming soon that will delve into this further, because I’m insanely curious about the possibilities for them. I had kind of written Angelo off as a player/manwhore, but I’m seeing him in a new light. If anything, I’ve definitely learned my lesson about prematurely judging characters. As for Jude Mikhail, I can see why Angelo’s interested; JM’s quiet, mysterious and completely the opposite of Angelo’s usual “type.” If he’s decided to make a change and seek something more serious and permanent, someone like JM is probably what he needs. Now if only Grey and Lyn would reveal why Jude Mikhail’s keeping his distance…
RATING: BAD ASS BOOTS!
