Mason Arquette isn’t one for mincing words. In fact, he often rubs people the wrong way—with the exception of Riece Burrell. Riece came with his own set of social issues, but he saw right through Mason’s tough exterior, and they made a perfect couple. Or so Mason thought… until Riece abruptly ended their relationship without much explanation.

Years later, Mason and Riece are thrown back together. As a US Forestry Service photographer, Riece is sent on assignment to the Black Hills, where Mason works. When Mason is tasked with guiding Riece around the territory, old feelings quickly are rekindled.

But nothing is ever easy. Just as Mason and Riece begin to work things out, they’re targeted by people with motives so vile and twisted they defy imagination. In a desperate race for their lives, they must depend on one another and take a big step out of their personal comfort zones to find their way back to safety—and back to love.

Our thoughts:

Gone Away is the fourth installment in the Circles series. This story can be read as a standalone as events/people from prior books are mentioned but are not an integral part of the plot. In this case, Mason Arquette was involved in the take down from book three, Jewel Cave.

Mason and Riece were together years ago in college. Mason was older than Riece but was also dumped by him. Riece has some behavioral quirks that his mother convinced him were undesirable. No man would want to deal with Riece’s issues long-term, hence the break-up. Riece loved Mason too much to make him live with that reality.

Fast forward to the present and we learn that the feelings these two have for each other have not waned. They’re both hoping this assignment will rekindle what they once had. Yes, hurt feeling are still raw and present. Can that be worked through? Absolutely. It doesn’t take long for the lust to be reignited between Mason and Riece. Mason likes to dominate and Riece submits perfectly. Masons control gives Riece the only opportunity in his life to just feel and be excited without analyzing every moment. Control is out of his hands and with the only person he trusts completely.

Their hook-ups are sexy and passionate. Their feelings are still raw but pushing towards the familiar. The love is still there, Riece wants it but he’s willing to wait for Mason to forgive him and give his love freely and with complete abandon, once again.

Mason and Riece getting back together is just a small part of the big picture. As they’re out photographing the area near Custer, SD they have to hike out to a lot of the best sites. Mason, is totally in his element but Riece is not, that’s why Mason was assigned to take Riece out. What they don’t expect are a group of heavily armed people hell-bent on tracking and hunting them down for sport. Thankfully, Mason is well-trained and set on protecting Riece. He’s the guy they definitely under estimate!

The suspense in this book makes it a page turner! I was almost consumed by it, needing to know if they’d get away to safety! Read this book for the intense chase, Riece’s quirks and Mason’s all around awesomeness!
