Cover Artist: Kristin Norris

Orion is a vampire with a tragic past. After running away from abusive parents at the tender age of sixteen, he was turned by a ruthless elder vampire and forced to torture and sexually abuse human feeders and submissive vampires. Though that’s all behind him now, he still lives in the shadow of what he was, and it’s cost him the loyalty of Xavier, the human feeder he loves. Malagan is Orion’s closest friend–the vampire who saved him from brutality all those years ago. Malagan knows the dominant side of Orion–the side Xavier needs–is still there, lurking below the surface. But if Orion’s going to find his way back to who he ought to be, he’ll need help. And Malagan is just the man for the job.

Freak. The word went straight to Orion’s guts and set a shiver of hatred running up his spine. He pushed his shoulders back and stood taller, towering over Clay, but to no effect. Clay didn’t back down, didn’t turn away, didn’t show one single sign of submitting.

Clay laughed and snapped his fingers in Orion’s face. “Look at you. Size of a fucking giant, but the balls of a three year old. You’ve got no spine, Orion. You’re nothing but a simpering weakling who hides behind Malagan.” He turned away and moved to the bar.

“Don’t turn your back on me,” Orion warned, tempting fate.

“Why not?” Clay called over his shoulder. “What are you going to do about it? You going to beat me senseless and take what you want? That’s what you were good at, wasn’t it? Why don’t you come over here and try it, freak? That’s right, come on over here. I won’t even turn around. I’ll let you have the first hit. That’s all you need. Just that first hit to get you going. And then you’ll bloody me up, right?”

“I’ll do what I must to get Xavier away from you.” Orion took a deep breath and stood his ground, unmoving. He wasn’t about to back away, but he wouldn’t do anything rash either.

Clay rounded on Orion and smirked. “You don’t have the guts.”

The door opened behind them, and Orion turned to see Malagan standing in the opening. Elation and anger warred within him. He wanted to smile and gloat to Clay that now things would go his way, but another part of him hated Malagan for showing up, for stealing his thunder. For proving Clay right.

“He may not,” Malagan murmured. “But I do.” He swiveled his head to look at Orion, sent a knowing, compassionate look Orion’s way. “Xavier and I will meet you back at the lair.”

Heart pounding, Orion swallowed his pride and nodded. He left Clay’s house, the sounds of breaking glass and Clay’s yelling echoing down the path. He stopped at his car and turned back toward the house. This wasn’t Malagan’s fight — Malagan hadn’t started it, after all, and Malagan shouldn’t be the one finishing it. Orion took three steps up the path and froze as his guts knotted up and a wave of nausea assaulted him. Gagging, he pressed the back of his hand to his mouth and stumbled back, colliding with the front of the car.

Frustration tore at him. Self-loathing and worthlessness wrapped their claws around him and pulled him under. Orion whirled and brought both fists crashing down onto the hood of his car. Again and again, until he’d left a bloody dent. Exhausted, lightheaded, he straightened and choked on a throat full of tears as he ran his fingers over the ruined hood. Why did he break everything he touched?

EXCERPT:

Kale peered into the car without getting any closer. He didn’t recognize the older man behind the steering wheel, didn’t really know anyone in this town yet. “Can I help you with something?”

“Probably.” The guy grinned. “How much for a blowjob?”

A fiery blush steamed up Kale’s neck. “Oh. I’m not um…” He glanced down at his clothing—red button-up shirt, jeans, boots. He wasn’t dressed like a hooker, was he? Then again, what did male hookers dress like?

“Fifty bucks?” the guy asked.

“No, you don’t understand.” Kale shook his head. “I’m not um…working. I’m just…” Just what? Just a runaway disappointment.

“Fine. Make it a hundred. C’mon. Get in.”

His eyes went wide. A hundred dollars? For a blowjob? A hundred dollars would get him a room at a motel and a meal for the night. And a blowjob wouldn’t take all that long. But he’d never done anything like that before with a stranger. The guy looked pretty clean. How bad could it be? Just a few minutes’ work, turn his head, spit, and take the money. “I don’t swallow,” he blurted.

The guy shrugged. “I don’t care.”

The words hit Kale with full force. The guy didn’t care. Not about him, his story, why he was out here on the streets in the first place. Not about his past, present, or future. Not about anything beyond his mouth. Kale frowned.

“You coming or not?” the guy prompted.

“Show me the money.”

He held up a hundred dollar bill.

If the guy would pay a hundred dollars for a blowjob, how much would he pay for something else? But Kale had seen way too many Lifetime movies about runaways-turned-prostitutes who got into cars and were never seen again. He puffed out his chest and straightened his shoulders, tried to look like he had some kind of guts. “Okay, but we’re not going to a skeevy hotel or your house or anything. Got it?”

The guy shrugged. “Whatever.”

Kale looked up and down the street and reached for the door handle. The car, like the guy, looked clean and tidy, smelled nice. He smiled at the green, tree-shaped air freshener hanging from the rearview mirror, and tried not to think of that scene in the movie Seven where the cops found hundreds of the things hanging in the sloth victim’s apartment.

Pudding Jones by DC Juris

THIS REVIEW MANY CONTAIN SPOILERS. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Wow. I’m speechless. I like an author who is willing to forgo the norm and end a book a little differently than most would. Kudos! DC Juris, you ripped a hole in my heart and I may not recover.  Seriously, I had moments with a tissue box a few times during this book. If I’m an emotional train wreck after reading a book I know it is a stellar read. EVERYONE should take an hour to stop and read this book. We all owe it to society as a whole to do so.

Pudding Jones is homeless and dwelling in an abandoned building when he agrees to be interviewed by Emerald (Emmer) Richfield. What they didn’t know was that both their lives would be forever changed from that moment on.

Emmer not only has more insight on homelessness, excess, and need but he gets a bit more education than he ever wanted about child abuse. Pudding Jones, has good days and bad days. He’s an extremely bright, enigmatic, quirky guy, who isn’t able to cope with the trauma endured at his parents hand. Pudding is happy living day to day amongst the homeless where he is the only person responsible for his destiny.

When these two worlds collide…magic happens! Maudlin, yes. True? Yes! Emmer finds he takes things for granted and covets too much. He learns to be more simplistic in his everyday needs and more aware of people around him. Pudding is also changed. Emmer is the only person Pudding has ever confided in about his long term abuse. He begins to heal and let Emmer help him through the difficult times. It isn’t long before they begin to really care for each other and wonder if it is love.

The stories Pudding shares are tragic. Pudding is so raw and so is Emmer from being the person the burden of these tales are told to. Just when you think you can’t possibly have another tear to shed, wrong! When the happiness begins it is all swept away, pulled back in a bit and then shattered into a million pieces. Your heart will be fractured. You will totally feel devastated and it will be totally worth every moment to have spent an hour or so with Pudding Jones.

This book is on my favorites shelf and was given a top rating by me, and I’m pretty reluctant to give away my five stars and favorite shelf additions. Pudding Jones deserves both.

RATING: STILETTOS (Pudding would prefer a button down, jeans and sandals.)
