Blog Tour and Review: Power Play (Scoring Chances #3) by Avon Gale

Power Play by Avon Gale
Series: Scoring Chances book 3
(This book can be read as a standalone)
Release Date: May 9, 2016
Pages or Words: 240 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Cover Artist: Aaron Anderson
Categories: Bisexual, Contemporary, Fiction

We’re happy to host Avon Gale today as she tours for her newest release in the Scoring Chances series, Power Play. Today, Avon Gale shares a fun playlist of songs from within the pages of Power Play. These songs are pominent during some of the funnier, outlandish, and sometimes bizarre moments that Misha and Max face as coaching staff for Belsey, the GM of the Spitfires. Definitely read the excerpt, partake in the playlist, and pick-up a copy of Power Play.

Blurb:

A freak accident during the Stanley Cup Playoffs put an end to Max Ashford’s hockey career. Despite everything, Max gets back into the game he loves—only this time, behind the bench as an assistant coach of the Spartanburg Spitfires, the worst team in the entire league. But nothing prepares him for the shock when he learns the new head coach is Misha Samarin, the man who caused Max’s accident.

After spending guilt-ridden years for his part in Max’s accident, Russian native Misha Samarin has no idea what to do when he’s confronted with Max’s presence. Max’s optimism plays havoc with Misha’s equilibrium—as does the fierce attraction that springs up between them.

Not only must they navigate Misha’s remorse and a past he’s spent a lifetime to forget, but also a sleazy GM determined to use their history as a marketing hook. But when an unwelcome visitor targets the team, Misha revisits his darkest days, which might cost him and Max the beginning they’ve worked so hard to build.

Excerpt:

“I’d never watched this, you know.”

“The YouTube video?” Misha had seen that too. It was filed with angry commenters yelling that he should be deported back to Russia.

“The hit.”

Misha blinked. “You’ve seen the commercial, though. Yes?”

“Yeah, I wish I could say I haven’t seen that. But I meant, I didn’t watch this until a few months ago. They played that game on the NHL channel, so I watched it.”

It never occurred to Misha that Max wouldn’t have seen it, but then he remembered that Max was the hero, not the villain of the story. Misha watched the hit play out on the screen. What must that feel like, to watch the moment it all ended? When Max hit the ice, did he know that game was his last? Did Misha know it was his? How had he felt? He couldn’t remember.

The scene switched to the replay. Misha watched dispassionately, retreated into the blinding pain of his migraine, and told himself that it was all right to suffer, that he should, that he deserved it.

Max paused the video. “Look. See what I have there?”

Misha blinked. He had not expected questions. “I—what?”

“The puck, Misha. The puck. Your hit wasn’t late.”

Oh. “Yes. I know.”

Max stared at him. On the television screen, their younger selves were suspended at the moment everything changed.

A playlist from Avon Gale for Power Play:

Here’s a song playlist for Power Play! If you like, I’ve made one on Youtube here:

These songs are referenced in the book in various ways:

“I Need a Hero” – Bonnie Tyler

“It’s Raining Men” — The Weather Girls

“One Night in Bangkok” (Chess the Musical) – Murray Head

Champion (in which Alexander Ovechkin raps for a bit at about minute 3:00)

Soviet National Anthem (the version from “The Hunt for Red October”)

Other songs:

“Rose Tattoo” – Dropkick Murphys (I highly recommend the video about the

Habs/Bruins rivalry that premiered at the Winter Classic – and was way better than that travesty of the game https://youtu.be/PbkfV-iR0nA

“Time to Go” – Dropkick Murphys (this one’s for the Bruins, and for Isaac Drake, the Spitfires’ feisty goalie!)

And because no hockey playlist should be without it:

“The Hockey Song” by Stompin’ Tom Connors

Avon Gale was once the mayor on Foursquare of Jazzercise and Lollicup, which should tell you all you need to know about her as a person. She likes road trips, rock concerts, drinking Kentucky bourbon and yelling at hockey. She’s a displaced southerner living in a liberal midwestern college town, and when she’s not writing you can find her at the salon, making her clients look and feel fabulous. Our thoughts:

A stoic, brooding, and sexy Russian. A sweet, energetic, optimistic American. Hells yeah! Bring it Avon Gale! Power Play, the third installment in the Scoring Chances series is a must read for sport romance lovers!

Misha Samarin has been hired as the head coach for the ECHL team, the Spartanburg Spitfires. The team with a losing record. The bottom of the barrel. The new owner is looking for some drama and hires Max Ashford as the assistant head coach. These two have a tragic history. Misha is responsible for the career ending hit on Max. Misha has never been able to move past the event and never played another day of professional hockey following it. Neither did Max. It seems their fate was similar but one has moved past it and there other has not.

Max finds himself attracted to Misha and is determined to get to know him. Doing so requires more than just delving into his newly discovered bisexuality, it also requires navigating a man who’s brooding and fierce. Misha is also hesitant due to their past and Max has to show Misha that he’s not angry over what happened, he never was  angry at him.

All the hesitation and self loathing from Misha turns out to be more deeply seeded than Max realized. I was surprised by what the big reveal from the past was. I expected it to be the obvious father connection to crime but it was much more personal for Misha and his self-inflicted disgust with himself. Max is ever the sweet, understanding, practical man and he helps Misha pick himself up from this as well.

Power Play is multifaceted: Max has to come out to his family; Misha must face and accept multiple things from the past; the team has to win hockey; they have to protect their goalie from extortion. Never a dull moment to be had! When they’re not navigating all of that, Max and Misha are tearing it up in the bedroom. They move slowly but it never lacks heat or connection. Once they become comfortable and ready to give it all, there’s no holding them back. It’s fiery romance and eager enthusiasm laced with a sultry verbal Russian, a perfectly sexy combination.

A truly enjoyable novel from start to finish! An added bonus is the first chapter from the next book and it’s sure to be a treat! I’ll be anxiously awaiting its release!

Blog Tour and Review: Wolf, en Garde by A.F. Henley

Wolf Animation GIF Header

Welcome back to the blog tour and giveaway for my newest release, Wolf en Garde. I’ve been taking these opportunities to introduce, or in some cases re-introduce, the characters and places found in the story through tiny teasers from the novel. And we’ve finally got to the point in the tour where we’re meeting some new characters – the people that represent those folks that live on the other side of the wolves.

While this character isn’t a major one in the novel, he is a very good indicator of the people that Lyle, the MC, as well as Lyle’s family, have been accustomed to dealing with. The “law,” so to speak… the guys that the wolves don’t want to see standing at their door.

Before we get to it, though, as a thank you for joining me, I want to remind you to read through to the end of the post to find out how you could win your very own signed, print copy of Wolf en Garde, a sterling silver (nickel and lead-free) Howling Wolf Bangle, and a $20 gift certificate to the Less Than Three Press book market!

And now, I present:

Tiny Teaser: Introducing – The “Law”

The grumble died on his tongue as he swung the door open and stared at the man on the step: head to toe in a shapeless forest green suit, a god-awful ranger’s hat finger-clasped in one hand, a shiny gold bison-detailed badge over the left pocket, and a just-as- shiny gold bar over the right pocket with DWIGHT J. ROSIEN inscribed on it. Definitely, most assuredly, not a Girl Scout and a good step up from Boy Scout. A park ranger. With rank, if the suit and the shinies could be trusted.

Dwight smiled (or attempted to pass the flick of his cheeks off as one, anyway) and extended his hand. “Lyle? Lyle O’Connell?”

Lyle narrowed his eyes. “Who’s asking?”

All the right kind of people, Lyle,” Dwight said smoothly. “Can I have a few words with you?”

“It’s not my house.” Lyle crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the frame of the door. “I really shouldn’t let anyone in without the owner’s consent.”

Dwight J. Rosien offered Lyle another quick, not-quite smile. “Such a good little guard dog, aren’t you, Lyle?” He waved a hand at the open door and stepped forward. “It would be in your best interest not have this conversation on the front porch.” He leveled his gaze with Lyle’s. “Wolf.”

Lyle’s blood seemed to turn to ice. “Who are you?”

“An associate,” Dwight said casually. “Or, if sets you more at ease, let’s say a friend of a friend.” He pushed past Lyle and walked into the foyer. “I’ll get right to the point so we don”t end up getting interrupted by the return of Mr. and Mrs. Connor.” He looked over his shoulder. “You might want to close the door.”

Nothing on Lyle’s body wanted to work. His feet didn’t want to cooperate as he turned back to the house. His fingers didn’t want to unclench and shut the door, though he managed to force them to do both. But there was no way he could insist on his throat opening enough for speech. Instead, in the now-darkened hallway Lyle watched Dwight (J. Rosien, Lyle’s head repeated) peek into the various rooms that led off the foyer and assess the area.

“There has been some…” Dwight let his words trail off, he shrugged, and he came back toward Lyle with a slow, deliberate walk. “Some odd activity. Some disappearances. Normally things like that would be out of my, oh, let’s say pay grade, but I believe these particular ones might be a little different than your normal, run of the mill disappearances.” His eyes were like chips of ice as his gaze bored into Lyle’s. “Would you know anything about these, Lyle?”

Lyle had to swallow hard before he could reply. “Why would I?”

“You know I can’t tell you that.” Dwight softened his expression and leaned closer. “At least, I shouldn’t. But these are… oh… special people. People we’ve been watching for some time. You do know who I mean when I say ‘we,’ don’t you, Lyle?”

Our Thoughts:

After everything that went down between Randy, Vaughn and Lyle in the first book, I wasn’t surprised to see that Lyle was still struggling. A family trip back to Randy’s home in Washington, DC is the perfect opportunity for Lyle to find himself.

Lyle is still struggling to come to terms with Vaughn and Randy’s relationship. At this point he’s not sure if he loathes the fact that they’re together, still has feelings for Randy, or if there’s something more or something less. All this time Lyle thought that there was an attraction to Randy but it was a power struggle. It was more of a meeting of minds and brawn between him and his dad. All this time he’s thinking he has to be a beta, but Lyle is a true alpha. He’s strong and he’s more in touch with his wolf and the senses the wolf enhances, when in his human form.

Randy’s mother, Mary, pushes for Lyle to get out and roam the area much to Vaughn and Randy’s dismay. They can’t necessarily say no without looking overbearing. Lyle seizes the opportunity to get out from the scrutiny of his father and away from Randy and Vaughn’s relationship. During his ventures out into the streets of the DC area, Lyle meets Arius–a vampire. Lyle knows he should be afraid of the vampire, he knows that he should run from Arius, yet he can’t.

Arius is an extreme character. He has these grand, exuberant, and often scary rants that Lyle sometimes agrees with but overall just thinks they’re the delusions of a crazy man. He is attracted to Arius but he’s not sure if that attraction is from Arius’ manipulations or true feelings.

A combination of events are set into motion causing Lyle to realize that Arius is up to more evil than he had ever imagined. Arius also has some unbelievable partnerships. Lyle rescues Rafe from Arius’ clutches. Now he must race towards home, back to Wolf, Wyoming. Sometimes one just needs to go home. Sometimes the ties that really are the strongest and the people who really can help are those who were thought to be against you all along, that’s what Lyle learns.

Lyle finds his way, his true self, in this book. It takes him awhile but once he sees what he truly wants he’s finally on the right path.  He wants to be heard, to be the strong wolf he knew he was when everything started to fall apart. Coming home, his family stand beside him again and the interloper, Randy, is the skeptical one. That speaks volumes to Lyle and it really lets him see that the attraction isn’t there anymore. With Rafe, Lyle also realizes that he can have love and family. He’s put into the same situation that his father was put into in the first book and he now knows how hard of a situation that was and how difficult it is to get out of it. It’s going to take both his man and his wolf to win this fight but Lyle is strong enough and determined enough to come out the victor.

AF Henley weaves quite the tale! He has a very eloquent writing style and really keeps you hanging on until the bitter end, wondering what is going to happen! The book ends with us knowing that there could potentially be more to come for Vaughn, Randy, Lyle, and Rafe.  We also get the sense that the tides have changed and the wolves are not going to be pushed down any longer. It’s time to get back in touch with their original roots and the strength they once had as packs.

Blog Tour and Review: Risk Aware by Amelia C. Gormley

We’re pleased to be on Amelia C. Gormley’s blog tour for Risk Aware! Welcome, Amelia!

RiskAware_TourBanner

Hi, and welcome to the RISK AWARE blog tour!

RISK AWARE is probably the longest single writing project I’ve ever undertaken. I started working on the concept in the spring of 2013, not long after I finished writing SAUGATUCK SUMMER. Geoff and Robin first appeared as minor characters—already in an established relationship—in SAUGATUCK SUMMER and I wanted to pursue their backstory.

Disabled people aren’t generally featured in BDSM fiction, and the sorts of BDSM usually portrayed is largely focused on activities that could be injurious—if not actually fatal—to something with Geoff’s condition. The story concept gave me an opportunity to examine several things we don’t often see in erotic romance. But it also meant I had to step far outside my own personal sphere of knowledge and experience on multiple levels. Which meant research was required.

Lots and lots of research.

The upshot is that the book took me over two years to write. If you’ve followed my posts on other blog tours in the past, you’ll know that’s highly unusual for me. I wrote SAUGATUCK SUMMER—a longer book—in about fifteen days. A lot of this is because I kept setting the manuscript aside to work on other projects and then taking a while to get back into things. But most of it is that getting it right required so much effort. So it’s particularly gratifying to finally get to share it with everyone who has been waiting for Geoff and Robin’s story, and also with people who may just be coming into the Saugatuck universe.

So thank you for being here!

RiskAware_600x900

About Risk Aware

Tattoo artist Geoff Gilchrest is convinced his life is some sort of cosmic joke. Why else would a hemophiliac also be a masochist? He’s given himself more than one elbow bleed since puberty just doing what guys do when alone and bored, so forget about whips and chains. How many partners would contemplate playing with someone even a mild flogging could kill?

Gallery owner Robin Brady knows he can deliver what Geoff needs: to be taken to the edge of danger but never beyond. But Robin came to Saugatuck to get away from the leather scene and heal from a betrayal by his former sub, so he’s not sure he should get involved with Geoff. His ambivalence isn’t helped by the fact that Geoff’s unwillingness to communicate about his well-being hits Robin in some very raw places.

Geoff’s hemophilia isn’t the obstacle he thinks it is. Instead, a lack of trust—on both their parts—is what could end them before they have a chance to begin.

Check out an excerpt of Risk Aware at Riptide.

About Amelia C. Gormley

Amelia C. Gormley published her first short story in the school newspaper in the 4th grade, and since then has suffered the persistent delusion that enabling other people to hear the voices in her head might be a worthwhile endeavor. She’s even convinced her hapless spouse that it could be a lucrative one as well, especially when coupled with her real-life interest in angst, kink, social justice issues, and pretty men. When her husband and son aren’t interacting with the back of her head as she stares at the computer, they rely on her to feed them, maintain their domicile, and keep some semblance of order in their lives (all very, very bad ideas—they really should know better by now.) She can also be found playing video games and ranting on Tumblr, seeing as how she’s one of those horrid social justice warriors out to destroy free speech, gaming, geek culture, and everything else that’s fun everywhere.

Our Thoughts:

Blown away! Yes, I was blown away by how intense this book was with the BDSM play, knowing it was about two men with huge issues. Usually that keeps the play a bit more toned down but this was edge play all the way! Those who like to read intense, gritty BDSM play will not be disappointed. Add to that the sincere respect and eventual love between Robin and Geoff, Risk Aware is a five-star novel.

Robin is trying to remove himself from the BDSM scene, but the draw is just too much. He’s still spinning from the lawsuit his ex slapped him with and the fact he will always have to fear people not understanding his lifestyle. He’s a serious Dom, taking every risk into consideration, never playing dangerously. That’s why he’s surprised to find himself looking for a submissive one night is Saugatuck.

Geoff carries a huge burden. He’s a hemophiliac with an intense desire to scene in some heavy BDSM play. The type of play to leave welts, bruises, and broken skin. He knows it could be dangerous, that’s the appeal. He’s also too conscientious to even consider doing the act. Now he feel unfulfilled and sad with his life. So much guilt from his overprotective mother through he years has really messed with Geoff’s mind. Now that both his parents are gone, his sister is pushing him to take a few risks and enjoy life. Would she say that if she knew what Geoff truly desired?

When these two men meet up, it’s flames and fireworks! They’re hot for each other from the start but Geoff withholds the fact he’s a hemophiliac. When Robin finds out, he’s shocked that Geoff would be so careless. Robin is willing to research and do what is necessary to keep Geoff safe while they play but communication is key. If Geoff isn’t willing to disclose everything and let Robin in, they don’t stand a chance.

We see quite a bit of growth in Geoff as the months pass by. He starts to trust Robin and see himself in a different light. He hates feeling different and treated like an invalid. Robin helps him see that being cared for and feeling the need to withhold becauseof his hang-ups are two separate things. Geoff has to break past the wall built around him by his mother and trust himself, his knowledge of his body, and Robin. Robin also has to work through his issues with his past. Being forced into dominating past what he’s comfortable giving will not happen again. It’s all about trust, full disclosure, and risk awareness.

Together they fly and it’s absolutely beautiful. The BDSM play is intense and carefully executed. Geoff is always so blissed out and Robin is the ultimate caregiver. Both truly get what they need within their relationship. No big black moments in this novel…. Yay! Just a story of two men navigating their issues to trust and love completely for the first time. The gradual slide into a complete and satisfying relationship that is sometimes mundane and sweet, other times bold, daring and severe. Always, it is lovely. Loved this story, loved Geoff and Robin from start to finish.

RATING:  STILETTOS!!
