Our thoughts:

I would call The Rascal a perfect novel to read in the month of October. We’re starting to see Halloween decorations, movies and costumes in stores, online and on television. We’re preparing for all things spooky and paranormal.

The Rascal falls into the categories spooky and paranormal perfectly. Arvin weaves a tale that is just as much rooted in the past as it is the present. When Chloe and Jeff move into a cabin on Bad Luck Hill, they are thrust into an evil feud that has been a long time brewing in that cabin. The town of Wicker is just as thirsty for a morsel of the goings-on on Bad Luck Hill and not at all willing to help Chloe or Jeff figure out what they are experiencing or how to fight it.

Chloe is a bit of a clairvoyant and she realizes from the moment they arrive that something is desperately wrong on Bad Luck Hill. The cabin, barn and well on the property are not immune to the reaches of those still lingering around.

Arvin masterfully writes evil, greed, love,  and hatred into a haunting tale of all that can go wrong within a family. The far-reaching effects of love gone wrong and those that exploit family for their own means. A true ghost story, The Rascal will keep you in suspense and leave you stunned on the final page.

Meet the author:

Some of [Arvin’s] work is as direct as Hemingway with the sensitivity of O’Connor or Shields, and yet others nuanced as if Maupin wrote a letter to Penthouse.” – Thom Fitzgerald, director THE HANGING GARDEN

Eric Arvin resides in the same sleepy Indiana river town where he grew up. He graduated from Hanover College with a Bachelors in History. He has lived, for brief periods, in Italy and Australia. He has survived brain surgery and his own loud-mouthed personal demons. Eric is the author of WOKE UP IN A STRANGE PLACE, THE MINGLED DESTINIES OF CROCODILES & MEN, SUBSURDITY, SIMPLE MEN, and various other sundry and not-so-sundry writings. He intends to live the rest of his days with tongue in cheek and eyes set to roam.

Excerpt: From Nine-Tenths of the Law by Kiernan Kelly

Let me set the scene for you. There I was, on my bed, naked, my asshole greased, and the butt plug inserted in it as far as possible, angled to hit my prostate, the vibrating option turned on. I was fisting my cock, rock hard and slick with lube, edging so close to orgasm my balls felt ready to pop.

“Fuck, it’s dark in here.”

I believe I may have completely levitated off the mattress. I know my hard-on wilted like an ice sculpture in a microwave. Scanning the bedroom, I looked for an intruder, but could see no one.

“Tight, too. I always did love a tight, hot ass.”

The speaker was British; the voice, deep and sexy, and coming from right behind me. I spun around in a circle a few times, trying to catch the person I assumed could only be a machete-wielding-chainsaw-brandishing-serial killer that happened to have a silky, dark chocolate voice, but I couldn’t see anyone. As far as I could discover, I was alone, which of course meant I’d imagined the voice.

“What are you doing, Olivier? Stop it at once. You’re making me dizzy.”

Olivier? No one had called me that in years, not since… Hearing the old nickname was shocking enough to leach the fear out of me for a minute. It took me another full sixty seconds to realize the deliciously decadent voice was not only real, but also somewhat familiar, and more importantly, coming from my ass.

That’s when I finally fainted.

Byron is tall, handsome, well spoken, wealthy, and has outstanding taste in wine and food. You’ll be impressed by his impeccable attire and eloquence in conversation, ranging from Baroque art to the newest advances in pharmacology. With his charming smile and elegant manners, Byron truly is the perfect date… and who doesn’t love a man who appreciates opera?

What’s the catch, you ask?

Just this: if Byron finds you suitable, he will subject you to utterly depraved forms of torture.

No, I’m not talking about S&M.

Byron will mutilate, rape, and then kill you. Don’t think that you will survive the encounter, because you won’t. He has a perfect record.

Intrigued? Would you like me to arrange a rendezvous? It has to be in the next few days because he’s leaving on a trip south to much warmer climes, and his calendar will be completely full.

Yes? Very good. I will make a reservation for two under the name of Smith.

Who am I? I’m Gloria, his personal assistant.

Our thoughts:

Better the Devil You Know is definitely not for the faint of heart. Bey Deckard takes us deep into the sadistic mind of a serial killer. Byron has been killing since he was a child. He’s cold and ruthless. Showing no remorse or ability to stop what he does. The more pain, suffering and blood the more Byron gets off.

From the opening scene we are bombarded with intense torture and decimation of the human spirit. Throughout the book we are introduced to some of Byron’s victims. Each story more severe and callous than the last. Just when I felt Byron was unstoppable, everything changed.

When Byron is given a taste of his own methods in hell, everything is turned upside down. Deckard mastered the twists and turns in this novel. As we spin from the graphic scenes, we’re caught off guard and drawn down a different path. The decent into hell, the rehabilitation, the inevitable situation change are all captivating and surprising.

Please read the warnings for this novel. There’s extreme torture and sadistic acts. If you can get through the first scene, you will jump onto a unique ride that’s destination is quite fitting.

Series: Drakyl Ranch book 1
Release date: 1 September 2015

Categories: Paranormal, M/M Romance, Horror

Aaron thought he was dying, Jaret showed him how to live.
Now the only thing standing between them and forever was an ancient enemy set on their annihilation.

Living in Montana and working the ranch is all Aaron wants to do for the rest of his life. Diagnosed as allergic to the sun thirteen years previous, every day is a struggle to get out of bed. Having to wear long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and even material to cover his face from the effects of the sun, just makes it all worse. Now, in his thirty-second year, he is sure this will be his last summer. While he hates it, he knows he needs to come to terms with the truth and put things in order for his younger cousins. Before he does so, he heads out for one night of pleasure before facing what’s coming.

Jaret loves excitement and new adventures. For over five hundred years, he has sought them out. In Montana on a whim, he comes across someone he doesn’t expect, someone who makes him feel things he does not understand and does not want to give up. In no time at all, he feels like he cannot live without Aaron. The only problem is Aaron doesn’t know who he is, what he is, nor that he isn’t going to die. Not on Jaret’s watch. With a plan to help the other man discover who he is in place, he only has one thing to worry about: whether an ancient enemy will come and destroy everything he now holds dear.

Warning: This book is a paranormal m/m romance with some horror elements. It also crosses cowboy and vampire genres. If you don’t think cowboys look hot with fangs, you’re missing out.

Discovery Teaser 1

Where was Jaret? He stood up tall and looked around, but at first all he saw were their horses who seemed spooked. They had huddled into a tight bunch, looking prepared to run away at any moment. He’d never seen them do that before.

Slight movement out of the corner of his eye made him reach for his gun. Only to realize he hadn’t even thought to bring it. “Fuck.” Stalking toward him—or actually Blaze and Krage—was a huge cougar. Before he could sound an alarm that would have his horses running away quickly, Jaret came out of nowhere.

Faster than he could have imagined, the man tore around the herd heading straight for the cat. Moving as fluidly as the mountain lion did, he sped up, a growl leaving his mouth. Wait. A growl? Nothing that alarming could have come from him. Sure, he’d heard Jared growl in annoyance or to tease him. But the sound that just left his throat was menacing. Obviously the cat thought so to as it whipped around and let out a roar. It hunched down and Aaron felt completely useless at protecting his lover until the cougar suddenly flumped to the side. Blinking in confusion, he looked again even as his heart beat so fast in his ears, he couldn’t hear anything.

Strange sensations overtook him as Jaret looked up and nodded at him, as if this was all supposed to make sense. His fingers tingled and he flexed them over and over, his upper jaw throbbing painfully, the ache increasing exponentially as Jaret picked up the lion. A low rumble filled the air but Aaron wasn’t sure where it came from and he couldn’t look away from the man walking toward him.

Meet the author:

Thianna Durston is a writer by day and supernova by night. Or at least that’s what the faeries tell her. And who is she to deny those pesky *cough* lovely little creatures?

She lives in the Pacific Northwest, though her heart belongs elsewhere. In the meantime, until she can return to the place she calls home, she happily lives in a city that still thinks it’s a small town. Thankfully, it has given her muse lots of amusing places to start a story.
