Blog Tour and Review: 24/7 (The Subs Club #4) by J.A. Rock

Hi! I’m J.A. Rock, and right now I’m touring the internet talking about my latest release, 24/7—Book 4 in The Subs Club series. Thanks so much to the blogs that are hosting me on this tour, and be sure to leave comments on the tour posts for a chance to win a $15 Riptide Publishing gift card!

About 24/7

We started the Subs Club to make the kink community safer for subs. Except now the others are so busy chasing their happy endings, it’s like they’ve forgotten what Bill did to Hal and the fact that he got away with it. They used to think I was betraying Hal’s memory by hooking up with the owners of the club where he died. Now they don’t seem to care about any of it anymore.

Maybe I am sometimes angry with GK and Kel for giving Bill a second chance, but they’ve been mentoring me for a year now, and whatever else they’ve done, they make me feel incredibly safe. So I want to try something: I want to offer them my complete submission, 24/7. To serve the people who forgave Bill. That’s the way I want to hurt.

Except I’m starting to care about them in a way I never meant to—and I think they feel the same way. But after Hal, I don’t know if I want to be in love again. Because what I really need, more than anything, is to see Bill brought to justice. Even if I have to do it myself. Even if it means losing GK and Kel.

About the Subs Club series

After the death of their friend Hal at the hands of an irresponsible dom, submissive friends Dave, Kamen, Miles, and Gould band together to form the Subs Club—an organization seeking to expose dangerous local doms. The club slowly evolves as romances blossom, loyalties are tested, and tensions mount in a community already struggling for unity in the wake of Hal’s death.

From domestic discipline to knife play to fashion paraphilia, and from family drama to new jobs to first loves, the members of the Subs Club explore life’s kinks inside and outside of the bedroom as they attempt to let go of the past and move forward.

Our Thoughts

From the beginning of the series, Gould is the one friend we know the least about. What we do knows is that he was Hal’s best friend since childhood and they became involved in a relationship that didn’t quite work out. Hal is taken from Gould in the most unfortunate way, during a BDSM scene at club Riddle. The whole situation was tragic and handled in such a way that no one really knew what really happened and who was to blame. Gould feels it is 100 percent obvious. Bill, the Dom Hal was playing with, was responsible and he got off. He didn’t pay. He is alive living his life (not in jail, not paying for his crime) and Hal is dead.

Gould was the quiet one of the bunch. When they wanted him to take part in their group conversations, they could always count on him to be there and respond in the affirmative. It’s like Gould was just part of the furniture. This is why we don’t know him well going into his story. What we quickly discover is that Gould is a mess. Thank goodness for the internal dialogue JA Rock writes for Gould. Without it, we’d have nothing on him. He just doesn’t speak his mind. Ever. It’s actually frustrating at times and impacts his relationships and potential play partners. He never really says what he wants or needs in a scene let alone when with friends. He just goes along with whatever is done, suggested, or planned.

Gould starts to play with Greg and Kel, the owners of Riddle. I truly wondered if he was doing this to get revenge for them forgiving Bill and mentoring him after the trial. Soon, it is apparent that he actually is attracted to Kel and has a growing fondness for Greg as well. The whole Bill and Hal situation just muddies up everything for Gould. He’s still grieving but does it silently and internally. No one can help him because he just won’t talk! Gould asks Kel to be his Master so he can be her slave, thinking the degradation and humiliation will help break him and remove all the pain. That might have worked if he wasn’t holding onto so much pain and guilt. He thinks so lowly of himself but he’s also seriously missing Hal. He’s not whole and trying to become whole through humiliation isn’t the answer.

Needless to say, it becomes a total shit storm (sorry for the language but it is) for everyone, Gould, Greg, Kel, Dave, Miles, and Kamen. Even as the story finishes I felt Gould was still unstable. Finally healing, yes. Better, yes. Still unstable, yes. He was just so all over the place emotionally and he had no outlet. no communication skills to work through everything and heal. Instead, he deflects and thinks that giving up who he is through being a slave will make everything better. The pain from losing Hal would disappear. Thing is, Gould was holding onto Hal so tightly that he would never be able to let go of the pain. He sought memories of Hal out, trying so hard to hold on to every memory that he was self-sabotaging.

If I had to choose one word to describe Gould and his story, it would be complex. I still don’t feel I fully know him or understand his wants or needs. I do believe that’s because he doesn’t either. Gould will continue to be an enigma in chaos until he fully heals and that’s totally okay. He has amazing friends and they are there for him in good and bad times.

Our Thoughts:

All the stories in this collection were nice little escapes into different scenes and kinks within the BDSM world. Overall a very enjoyable collection by superior writers in the genre. I’ve highlighted just two, but the other stories were stand-outs as well.

House Rules by Cari Z
Jon is a writer. He’s at home while his partner, an actor, is at the Oscars. Alistair leaves Jon with specific rules he must abide by while he’s away. They’re there to keep Jon focused, healthy and grounded.

Unfortunately, Jon’s jealousy over Alistair’s co-worker sends him off his path. Jon is needy,  Alistair is gone so he racks up infractions that he knows will be punishable.

Jon’s wit was fun to read he had a blasé attitude that fit his character and made him likeable from the first few sentences. His internal struggle to check off rules as he completed them while back-talking in his mind, acting like he could give a flip if he completed the rules was perfection!

Once Alistair arrives home and the infractions are discussed, we see so much more of Jon, his insecurities, needs and the games he plays. Alistair doles out his punishment to the fullest, not letting Jon steer the punishment into an award.

This short had it all, likeable guys, a hot spanking scene and witty dialogue. Total win!

The Harder They Fall by  Heidi Belleau and Lisa Henry
Tad is quite the brat. Born with a golden spoon in his mouth, Tad’s never wanted. Unless you count attention and affection from his parents. All they did was push him off on nannies and press rules upon him and his behavior. No wonder he’s a self-entitled brat.

Tad makes the mistake of degrading one of the men in a brothel, then coming back to the place making demands, yet again. This time he will get much more than he bargained for. The so-called ‘whore’ he thinks he’s going to degrade and control has him on his knees and crying out before he can process how the switch was flipped!

‘Daddy’ is the owner of the brothel and he is not putting up with bratty Tad.  He plans to put him in his place with humiliation and rules. Soon Tad is groveling and needy. It seems ‘Daddy’ knows just how to control Tad and yet give him just what he’s been longing for. Attention, goals, rules, praise…

This short is all about the humiliation kink. ‘Daddy’ is merciless and Tad is consumed by this seasoned Dom. Loved the ending.  ;)

Guest Post: Joseph Lance Tonlet for Grif’s Toy

It is our pleasure to welcome, first time author, Joseph Lance Tonlet to 3 Chicks After Dark! Joseph is here to talk about his debut novel, Grif’s Toy and the kink within it’s pages. Reviews are flooding in, Grif’s Toy is worthy of every 5 Star review  it is receiving (here’s ours).

Without further delay, Joseph Lance Tonlet!

Humiliation is something we’ve all experienced at one time or another. Merriam Webster’s definition of humiliate is: “to reduce to a lower position in one’s own eyes or others’ eyes.” Being on the receiving end of humiliation is rarely a good thing and can leave us feeling afraid, or angry, or venerable. But what about sexual humiliation (in the form of denigration) as a kink?

Years ago I realized denigration, specifically Small Penis Humiliation (SPH), during sex served as major source of arousal for me—long before I even knew such a kink existed. Dr. Hernando Chaves, writing for the site askmen.com, says this about SPH: “…small penis humiliation, is a form of degradation play that uses eroticized shame for arousal. We often think of shame as a bad or negative feeling, but shame can have many different faces and elicit different responses within the body. For men, penis size is a touchy subject, and one filled with challenges to masculinity and confidence.” He goes onto say that, for some men, SPH offers not only a source of arousal but also one of empowerment—a way for lesser endowed men to own and “turn the tables from fear and insecurity to power and control.”

Kinks of any sort can be difficult to understand and come to terms with. Indeed, many of us may ask ourselves things like: “Why do I like this?” or “Doesn’t this make me weird?” Fortunately, the Internet, with its pool of wisdom and answers *wink*, is now at nearly everyone’s fingertips. The key, at least for me, was embracing that which made me different—that which aroused me. Having a partner who also embraced my kinks was nothing short of liberating.

Grif, one of the main characters of Grif’s Toy, is on a journey of self-discovery. This journey challenges him to not only embrace his kinks, but to ask himself whether he’ll be able to open himself up to the possibility of love. After all, is there any more enjoyable journey than one filled with kinky sex and love? *grins*

Grif's Toy

Grif believes he’ll live his life as a virgin. After all, who would want him? How could anyone find him, a guy who came with less than man-sized equipment, worthy of their love?

What he hadn’t counted on were the two amazing men who would change his life. After entering college, he meets Tate, his fun-loving, roommate. While years later, with Tate now just a memory, Wes, a handsome, rugged ex-marine who runs his own security firm enters his life.

Both men lead Grif through a twisted mesh of pleasure, pain, and denial, as they force him to see his value, despite his size and insecurities.

“Let’s take a shower,” Wes said after we’d lain there kissing for what seemed like hours. I never dreamt kissing could be so fucking awesome.

“Um, Wes,” I said hesitantly. There was no way I was getting into a shower, or any other place which required I get naked with him.

“You can keep your jock on, babe, right? I mean, you went swimming in it today, didn’t you?”

Another deep kiss—tongues gently stroking one another, lips nibbling, he even licked my closed eyelids at one point—which caused me to completely forget what we’d been talking about.

“Come on, Grif…I promise it’ll be good,” he said so sincerely I knew there wasn’t a chance in hell I was going to say no.

“Okay, but you promise—,”

“The promise is in place until the day you ask me to either touch or to look…and that day will come. So, honestly, the only thing you have to ask yourself is if you trust me yet. And if today isn’t the day—the day to trust me enough not to need a re-promise,” he paused to rub a thumb over my eyebrow, “then ask away…as many times as you need to, I don’t mind. I’ll never intentionally mislead or lie to you.”

The things he said to me sometimes—how he knew exactly what I needed to hear— it made me feel so special, so wanted.

I nodded. “Yes, okay. I’m still scared…but…I find myself so willing to take chances with you. Chances I’ve never taken—or even thought of taking—with anyone else, and it surprises me.” Laughing at the irony of what I was about to say next, “And realizing I’m willing to take those chances also scares me.”

As he looked into my eyes, his thumb left my brow and ran gently across my bottom lip, “And, tell me if I’m wrong, but the fear I might somehow see Junior makes you even
harder, doesn’t it?”

The mischievous thumb moved lower, hovered just above one of my nipples, and barely grazed it—over and over.

I moaned with the teasing.

I cautiously nodded my head. “I’ve never been able to admit that to anyone, but yes, it does. As much as I feared it—did everything in my power to ensure that it never happened—I desperately wanted to somehow be exposed to one of the Grindr dudes and have him….” I broke off. I only had so much courage…could only share so much.

He picked up my thought. “And have him humiliate you?”

I nodded, but didn’t speak.

“Grif…,” he mildly chastised.

I summoned up the courage to give him the words he wanted. “Yes, Wes. That’s what I wanted. But there’s no way I’d ever trust one of those strangers to…,” I shook my head—a bit more vehemently than I had intended.

He flopped over on his back, looked up at the ceiling, and smiled as widely as I’d ever seen him smile.

Turning his head toward me with a naughty grin, “Grif, I fucking promise you we’re gonna have the best time—the fucking best. It may be weeks from now, or even months, but the day will come when we’ll both be ready for me to give you something only someone you trust implicitly can. And please, understand that just knowing it will happen—eventually—is all I could’ve ever hoped for; love and the occasional darkness.”

“Love?” I managed to eek out.

“Oh, without a doubt. I already know I’m gonna love you, and you’re gonna love me. The question of ‘darkness’ was really the only thing I was a bit uncertain about. But now…” And he grinned like Charlie holding a fucking Golden Ticket.

Our thoughts:

Incredibly intense affirmations of love are astoundingly beautiful and frequent. That alone sets it apart from most mm romance books. The men usually say their ‘I love you’s’ a few times but in Grif’s Toy, it’s declarations and total worship. These two are infatuated with each other and they share their feelings, desires and appreciation for each other over and over again.

The way the story develops was, hands down, part of the beauty. It’s a slow reveal as we journey from present into the past. Each journey back reveals another layer in Grif’s life. From his self discovery of being different from the other boys in junior high, to college and after. Every flashback serves a purpose in telling the reader another important aspect of Grif and how his life has come to be as it is.

Some of the journeys back are intense. Some are extremely sad. I grieved with Grif. Tissues being plucked from the box at a quick rate a few times. I don’t cry often in books. It takes truly sensitive and beautiful writing along with pure emotion to get me there. Grif’s Toy has the perfect mix of heat, sex, angst and humanity.

I saved the best for last. This book is truly about Grif’s journey to self discovery as far as his kink. His limitations fueled how he would give himself up during sex. He gave, no one touched. He would worship the person’s body and cock but never wanted reciprocation. He would never reveal his small penis. That was his secret and it was never to be shared with anyone. Too many humiliations taught him that lesson quite well.

It takes safe play with a friend to open Grif up to a few kinks that really made him hot and needy. He likes denial. He loves to be trashed talked to. He likes humiliation in the moment and loves it to the point of tears. Tate, his friend, was just a gateway into what he desired. With Wes, Grif truly found euphoria. Wes and Grif’s kinks aligned quite nicely. Wes was willing to give Grif exactly what he needed and also push him further than he could ever imagine needed in to go. With Wes, Grif could reveal himself and feel ashamed and yet worshiped in the same moment. The tears were full of love and anguish. The body worship was now two-sided and appreciated. The intensity cranked up so high it was off the charts.

Beautiful coupling, bewitching words, security and unadulterated love. Grif’s Toy will gently walk you through a journey like no other.

RATING: STILETTOS!!! (I’m so blown away, I can’t come up with a clever tag for the rating.)
