Dominic Bounds’ time to make his musical dreams come true is running out. If something doesn’t happen fast, he has to head home to find a real job. This competition is his last chance, and Dom needs to come out on top – but he never expected to fall for his rival. Our thoughts:

I’m not sure how I feel about this story. The idea of two members from rival bands falling in love has so much potential and appeal. I picture clandestine meetings and choosing between their heart or their music. Instead, the getting together part seemed easy. Even meeting up was easy. Heck they even had a confidant from the band that knew of their relationship!

What I wasn’t expecting was the angst coming from petty standards! When a guy totally lies about who he is and then gets self-righteous when the in the closet lover refuses to acknowledge him, I had issue with that. It wasn’t a deal breaker, it just seemed like a double standard.

I enjoyed the complexity of Dom’s family. He was loved and supported, Trey didn’t have any of that. However, it felt like too many problems were introduced to keep the story going longer when it could have been a shorter story about them getting together, playing music, and overcoming the odds. I could have done without the car accident, attack, and short break up.

This novel felt more new adult and if you go into it with that thought process, the immaturity and angst is totally fitting. It was a very different type of story from AM Arthur so I’m glad to experience something new and look forward to what else the new series has to offer.

John loves his job as head rigger for Cirque Brilliance. The heavy scarring over half his face makes it a little hard to meet new people, but John’s got a good crew and a nice found family, and he’s content with his lot in life.

When Cirque hires talent for a new show, John meets Bao, a bright, ever-cheerful acrobat. Bao seems drawn to John and becomes a constant presence at his side—talking to him during downtime, spending time with him at lunch, and generally seeking out his company.

John doesn’t know what to make of this. Sure, he likes Bao—maybe a little too much, honestly—but he’s had enough experience to know that Bao couldn’t possibly like him back. Or so he thinks, anyway. Fortunately, Bao seems determined to prove him wrong.

Our Thoughts:

Counterbalance is one of those stories that I ate up as I was reading. Just enough drama, romance, sweetness, and humanity to keep the pages turning. John is disfigured by a relative as a teen. It’s not easy being different and people aren’t always tolerant of his difference. He’s been called names and watches as people shrink away from him. His job as a rigger for a Cirque show is perfect. The talent in this type of show is a bit quirky too, so he feels at home behind the Cirque sets.

Then Bao enters John’s life. Bao is from China and new to the Cirque Brilliance show as a balancing talent. He’s super friendly and outgoing, meeting everyone. He approaches John and treats him exactly the same as everyone else. As if he doesn’t even see John’s disfigurement. Bao was sweet and innocent. He is almost childlike in his mannerisms but he grew on me quickly because it’s apparent he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body!

The attraction builds but John isn’t about to make the first move. The question is, will Bao be able to maneuver through cultural and language differences to get John to see what they could share together, or will this romance never see the light of day.

If you’re looking for the perfect afternoon getaway, Counterbalance would be a great choice!

Our thoughts:

Joseph Lance Tonlet, the master of the word! He brings us another intricate story for the Tease and Denial series. In Wes’ Denial, we go back and explore Wes’ past and also his present. For every scene with Wes and Grif, there is a scene from the past. We have Wes in high school, as he’s exploring his sexuality and his desire to dominate. We also get to explore Wes the Marine. In the Marine Corps he gets a real taste for the need to hurt while dominating and it scares him. He has to figure out a way to control himself to keep the person he’s playing with safe. That’s when we’re introduced to Thomas and Henrik.

Tonlet has a way of weaving a story so that we’re hanging on every word, every page, as we keep turning to find out more. I really like Wes and Grif together. They have quite the dynamic. Grif’s insecurities and his strength of character are ever-present during their vanilla and chocolate play. Wes has a way of controlling every situation, dominating Grif, but also being completely respectful of the boundaries set. In between all of the domination and submission and the play/games, we actually have a true love story between Grif and Wes. Wes is always needing to reassure and console Grif that he will stay with him as he is very insecure in the fact that  Wes will truly be around forever.

Wes has two big secrets that he’s keeping from Grif. They’ve impacted what he will and won’t do with Grif in scene or chocolate. Those secrets rear themselves during the flashbacks. That how he discloses to Grif. But, we get the actually reliving. It’s intense and yet gives great insight into Wes and his mindset.

Grif is remarkable. In the end his strength is the ultimate and his love, deep. Tonlet leaves us shredded but it was a lovely end to a true lifelong romance.

An accidental meeting and a misunderstanding lead to a life-altering connection.

A new job, a new city, and hopefully a new life. When chubby gamer Oliver Barnaby receives a job offer from the best boutique game developer in the country, he leaves his family and his less than spectacular existence in Oklahoma without a second’s hesitation. Determined to change more than his career and his geography, Oliver implements a plan to finally land a boyfriend. Step one is improving his skills in the bedroom.

A life that looks perfect on paper, but feels empty in reality. Attractive, successful, charismatic Jaime Snow has a life other people envy. His already booming business is growing. He isn’t lacking in friends. And he has no trouble finding a date. But there’s an emptiness in Jaime’s heart and a hole in his life that only the right man can fill.

An accidental meeting, a misunderstanding, and falling in love. When Oliver and Jaime end up at the same bar at the same time, they each see something they want in the other. Going to bed together that first night is easy. Building the lifetime relationship they both desperately crave will require trust, time, and a little misunderstanding.

Our thoughts:

Another Cardeno C romance that is truly romance! A sweet story from beginning to end, this story doesn’t even have a misunderstanding, let alone a black moment.

When Jaime finally opens up and tells Oliver all the misunderstandings and secrets he’s been keeping there isn’t a blow up or anything! It was actually pretty delightful and a nice change. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the strife, the tense moments and even the break-ups to get to the sweet reunion. Sometimes, it’s nice to just have that fairytale romance that begins and ends sweet and every layer in between is confectionery perfection.

Oliver was a gentle giant. A tall, stout man who was lacking in the self-esteem department. He thinks in order to be a better lover that he needs to gain some experience. His one and only boyfriend shook his confidence in the bedroom.

When Jaime sees the man of his dreams, the guy he could see himself with for the rest of his life, sitting alone at a table in a bar, he decides to seize the moment. Once he understands Oliver thinks he’s a male escort, he’s determined to keep Oliver interested and goes along with the ruse.

For such a rough and dishonest beginning, these two men find that they’re falling in love and escort or not, boss or not, age difference and negative self-awareness aside they’re committed. Jaime is giving, passionate, affectionate and always telling Oliver how much he loves and adores every inch of his mind and body. Oliver gives Jaime all the love and affection he craves. He’s the person Jaime needs to come home to every day.

This is the perfect feel good romance. It will leave you with a happy heart!
