Cherry Pie (Mercury Rising #1) by Samantha Kane

Cherry Pie CoverRelease Date: September 16th 2014, 2nd Edition
Published by Samhain Publishing
Purchased Copy from Amazon

John Ford packed up his life a year ago and moved from LA to small Mercury, North Carolina after the death of his long-term partner. He’s been living in a kind of suspended animation, fixing up the old house he bought there, reclusive and alone. Until the day Connor Meecham appears.

Conn Meecham has returned home, only to find it isn’t his anymore. Someone else owns his mother’s house now. But Conn needs that house to find the man he left behind more than eight years ago–before the drugs, before prison, before his life derailed. Lonely, desperate, lost, Conn finds in John a kindred soul.

Mercury is a dying town. But John sets out to change that when he learns what it means to Conn. Through home improvements, sex, old friends, sex, misunderstandings, sex, and homemade cherry pie, John and Conn may finally discover that where they are now can be heaven on earth if they want it to be

Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices.

Connor Meacham is making a soul-searching return to his roots in the hopes of regaining some semblance of the man he used to be. Is Mercury the magical solution to restoring his former glory and, more importantly, his confidence? It seems that battling all those inner demons would take its toll after a while.

This story is on emotional overload. There’s so much to sort out with Connor’s feelings about returning home, Connor’s feelings about John, John’s feelings about his past and how to deal with Connor and moving forward. I have a love/hate relationship with the emotional tension Samantha Kane develops between John and Connor. Readers will have no trouble understanding it – neither of these guys has had a simple life – but sometimes it becomes the elephant in the room. It’s a huge obstacle preventing them from going after what they really want, that is if they can be honest enough to admit what that is.

If you’re looking for a sexy romance complete with complex characters, complicated situations, and angsty tension, Cherry Pie is for you. At just under 200 pages it’s a quick, entertaining read, certainly well worth the time for this satisfying story.

“One of these days, Wren Tucker…” Aaron turned to his side, pillowing his head with his bent arm. His eyes slid closed, and he murmured, “I’m going to get to you.”

You already do. Wren crouched beside the bed. The first time Wren had seen him, Aaron had been dancing. The light from the club had touched on every toned dip and groove of Aaron’s body as it swiveled on the raised stage, his tight ass shaking with the beat of the music. All of that had been amazing, but it had been Aaron’s face that had captivated him—the free expression, like he was in another world. His full lips mouthing the lyrics, his head thrown back, and the locks of his black hair waving around his flushed face.

In that moment of abandon, Aaron had met Wren’s gaze, a smile tugging at the corner of his sensual mouth. Aaron had continued the dance, but he hadn’t stopped focusing on Wren.

Driven by FireBlurb:

Taber Delane is lucky to be alive, but his career as a firefighter ended the day a beam snapped, resulting in a crushing spinal injury. Most of his friends are willing to give him space, everyone except paramedic, Deacon Hall.

Deacon hasn’t met a challenge he couldn’t tackle and he knows Taber needs someone in his corner who isn’t afraid to stand up to the big bad fireman. The longer he’s around Taber, the more the sexy vulnerability of the man comes through. Deacon finds he doesn’t just want to be Taber’s live-in caregiver, he wants a chance at the passionate man beneath the stubborn shell.

A shell that is cracking, no matter how Taber tries to hold it together. Deacon being in his home starts to open him up—and open his eyes to the man Deacon hides from the rest of the world. Without seeing it coming, Taber soon craves more. A lot more.

Now if only Deacon can get Taber to see that it isn’t so bad having him there to assist. Even if and maybe especially when Taber is naked, dripping wet, and angry as hell.

“You’re not giving me a sponge bath,” Taber snapped and glowered at Deacon as he wheeled himself into the locker bay. The sweat ran down his temples, his shirt soaked through with it. He took in his motionless legs and grimaced before shooting Deacon another irritated look.

Deacon sat with his feet on one of the peeling dark blue benches, his back reclined against a bank of gray lockers along the far wall in the physical therapy building. A book was balanced on his knees, and black-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. His shaggy auburn hair fell to curl around his ears in disarray.

Deacon peered at him with pale green eyes. “There go my dreams of rubbing you down and tweeting the pics.”

Our thoughts:

I always fall for caregiver-turned-lover type books. Not only does Driven by Fire have this, but it also had a grouchy fireman and a compassionate paramedic. What wasn’t to love?

Taber was injured on a fire call with Firehouse 6. By time he was pulled from the burning structure, a beam had fallen on him causing a life changing injury. Taber suffered paralysis and was now confined to a wheelchair. He was awaiting tests that would determine if he’d ever get out of the wheelchair. What would his fate be?

Tired of being in the chair, out of work as a fireman and avoiding handsy home care nurses, Deacon becomes his new caregiver. Deacon, the hot firehouse paramedic. Taber isn’t sure this is a great idea, more for the fact he doesn’t want someone telling all the guys from work his failures.

Deacon is so different from what Taber expected. He treats him the same as he did prior to the accident. That’s something Taber has missed from others post accident. Deacon is compassionate but gives Taber the space he needs to feel useful and competent. As they’re maneuvering around the new living arrangement, the two men discover they’re attraction to each other can no longer be ignored. Deacon is happy to let Taber take control, but when Taber manages to let go and give up to Deacon, there is no fire that burns hotter.

This story is a great choice if you want a standalone or want to start into a new series. The secondary characters are entertaining and either have their own book or the potential for it. More fireman, ummmm…. yes! I believe Aaron’s book will be next and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Draven St. James had some clever uses for powdered sugar in Driven by Fire, I can only imagine what Aaron could get up to with…..

SPOTLIGHT: A Walk Through Fire by Felice Stevens

Today we’re thrilled to welcome Felice Stevens to 3 Chicks After Dark to highlight the first book in her Through Hell and Back seriesA Walk Through Fire. We asked her if she’d mind sharing her writing playlist for writing while she’s here, and she generously offered to throw in a giveaway for an Amazon gift card. Welcome, Felice!

The Music of Writing
by Felice Stevens

Music is always such an important part of setting a mood for me. Since the characters I write about tend to be angsty, the music I listen to is often dark or dare I say it, depressing. LOL. But since I am the Queen of Happily Ever Afters, I have to have some brightness at the end of the tunnel, otherwise I’d probably be found sitting on my sofa, surrounded by wine bottles and boxes of chocolate.

Come to think of it…

Well anyway, so here is the music I listened to while driving, where I do some of my best thinking so I don’t have to listen to my husband complaining about the other drivers, or walking to work, then waiting on line at Starbucks:

A Walk Through Fire CoverYears after running away from an abusive foster family, Asher Davis still struggles with the guilt of leaving his foster brothers behind. He’s climbed to unimaginable heights as a ruthless, high-powered attorney, creating a life of power and control. He takes whatever and whoever he wants.

Blaming himself for the death of his parents, Dr. Drew Klein retreats into a shell of loneliness, merely going through the motions of life. After a disastrous, short-lived marriage, Drew decides to leave his lucrative medical practice to set up a clinic for abused young men and women. The decision has more repercussions than Drew could ever imagine when the dark and sensual Ash Davis volunteers to help.

Although Drew isn’t gay, Ash is inexplicably drawn to him. He vows to simply bed him and forget him like he’s done with every other man. However, Drew’s sweet and caring nature and unexpected passion both stun and frighten Ash, who questions his right to any happiness at all. And when Ash befriends an abused young man who unwittingly draws the clinic into danger, threatening Drew’s safety and that of his beloved grandmother, Ash discovers that there is nothing he won’t sacrifice to protect the love he never thought he’d find.

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending just around the corner. I started reading traditional historical romances when I was a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until I picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that my interest in romance novels became renewed.

But somewhere along the way, my tastes shifted. While I still enjoy a juicy Historical romance, I began experimenting with newer, more cutting edge genres and discovered the world of Male/Male romance. Once I picked up her first, I became so enamored of the authors, the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion of the books, I knew I wanted to write my own.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.
