RELEASE BLITZ & REVIEW: Fast Connection (Cyberlove #2) by Megan Erickson & Santino Hassell

Today we’re thrilled to celebrate the release of Fast Connection, the sequel to outstanding m/m romance Strong Signal, from Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell! We’ve been anxiously awaiting Costigan’s story, and it doesn’t disappoint – Fast Connection absolutely blew us away. Enjoy!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

FastConnection coverAfter a decade of serving in the Army, everyone still expects me to be Dominic ‘Nicky’ Costigan—the skirt-chasing player. They don’t know I’ve been spending my days trying to figure out my post-military life. Including how to pick up guys.

When I meet Luke on a hookup app, he makes it clear it’s for one-night only. That’s fine with me, because I’m down to see what this silver fox can do. But after I arrive at his doorstep, it doesn’t take long to realize we have serious chemistry, and we end up meeting again.

He’s got more walls around his heart than a military base, but I think he’s as addicted to me as I am to him. He can’t resist me for long. I mean, who can? Except Luke’s rules exist for a reason, and when I test his limits, things get complicated. Maybe too complicated.

OUR THOUGHTS:

I’ve been dying to get my hands on Costigan’s story. After meeting his mildly irriatating, somewhat endearing character in Strong Signal, I’ve been curious to see how he’ll adjust to his newfound bisexuality and civilian life. Even while trying to keep it on the downlow during his time enlisted, having that secret half a world away had to be 100x easier than trying to hide it around his opinionated, verbally abusive father. Dominic’s decided to embrace his recently discovered attraction to guys and explore by testing his luck on Grindr. Lucky us.

Dominic’s story is much more than the romance I anticipated, and I love everything about it. The characters, the conflict, the resolution…just everything. There’s so much happening on so many levels that readers will be utterly consumed with the action and emotion of it all. The writing is brilliant – Erickson & Hassell bring the same style and tone found in Strong Signal while managing to give it a unique voice. Dominic and Luke are two primal, visceral men, and anything less than the raw hunger tangible in their encounters would be lacking. Often in series novels readers get déjà vu – feels like the same story just featuring different people. That’s definitely not the case here; Erickson & Hassell convey who these guys are just by the way they think. That is great writing, and I didn’t even mention my love for their sexy playful dialogue. Dominic and Luke have a bit of an edge to everything they do, one of the many things I missed about them when I made it to the end.

If I could offer one piece of advice to readers before they start it’s this: forget everything you know about May-Dec romances. Megan Erickson & Santino Hassell take what they like from this classic pairing and then pretty much rewrite the rest. Finally a May-December where the older partner isn’t always wiser! He can stand to learn a little – or a lot – from his younger counterpart. Erickson & Hassell put a fresh spin on divorce and sexuality, one that doesn’t culminate in a gay-for-you romance. While I enjoy that trope, it’s refreshing to find less predictable sexual exploration and struggle for acceptance.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

Megan Erickson picMegan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she likes writing her own endings better.

She lives in Pennsylvania with her very own nerdy husband and two kids. Although rather fun-sized, she’s been told she has a full-sized personality. When Megan isn’t writing, she’s either lounging with her two cats named after John Hughes characters or… thinking about writing.

Santino Hassell PicSantino Hassell was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed, school cutting grunge kid, then a transient twenty-something, and eventually transformed into an unlikely romance author.

Santino writes queer romance that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Perpetually shy, Quinn Mathers is content to remain in the shadow of his brash best friend Jess Hartman. But before their college graduation, he and Jess have planned one last hurrah: a spring break Caribbean cruise.

And it won’t be just any cruise. On board are members of the reality show Trip League, which follows young twenty-somethings on adventures around the world. Since the show’s beginning, Quinn has been fascinated by J. R. Butler, with his amazing body, warm eyes, and killer grin. Unfortunately, he’s straight—or so the world thinks.

At nineteen, J. R. signed a contract to play straight for the show, and there’s no way to get out of it now. Yet with each passing day, Quinn and J. R. find it harder to keep their hands off each other and to keep out of the camera’s frame. But when the lens finally focuses on them, J. R. must decide if he’s willing to risk his career by admitting his bisexuality, and Quinn must determine if he’s bold enough to stand in the spotlight with the man of his dreams…

OUR THOUGHTS:

The third book in the In Focus series takes romance to the high seas in this sweet, sexy tale. Readers will love everything from the fun, fresh setting to the current, pop-culture premise to the complex, dynamic characters.  Megan Erickson crafts a not-so-classic coming out story told with a healthy dose of wit, sass and seasickness.

It all begins quite innocently…Quinn and Jess taking off for the trip of a lifetime. They’re hard workers, scraping by and saving every cent to be able to enjoy this one last hurrah before graduating from college.  A cruise to the Caribbean with the cast of Trip League, a reality show chronicling the adventures of a colorful case of characters around the globe, sounds exciting, right? It’s the chance of a lifetime to meet and mingle with celebrities while enjoying some much deserved R&R.  If only things can really be that low key…

Several chance meetings put Quinn directly in the path of his secret celebrity crush, J.R. Butler. Quinn quickly learns just how much reality is in reality TV as he gets to know the “real” J.R.  A series of mixed signals paired with off-the-charts chemistry has Quinn confused and wanting to get to know J.R. a lot better.

The issue of homophobia in Hollywood and its effect on actors isn’t new or exclusive to this story, however, I enjoy the way Megan Erickson addresses it. Her presentation of the situation and circumstances is tangible; readers have no problem putting themselves in Jay’s place. As much as I hate to see his struggle, I find it hard to believe anyone wouldn’t make the same decision given his situation. I thoroughly enjoyed watching his character grow into one who’s strong enough to be true to himself.

RELEASE BLITZ & REVIEW: STRONG SIGNAL by Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell

Today we’re thrilled to celebrate the release of Strong Signal, a brand new, stand alone m/m romance from Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell! If you love m/m romance as much as we do, this is one story you won’t want to miss, in case you can’t tell from our five star review below. :) Enjoy!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

StrongSignal-fI was counting down the months until the end of my deployment. My days were spent working on military vehicles, and I spent my nights playing video games that would distract me until I could leave Staff Sergeant Garrett Reid behind.

That was when I met him: Kai Bannon, a fellow gamer with a famous stream channel.

I never expected to become fixated on someone who’d initially been a rival. And I’d never expected someone who oozed charm to notice me—a guy known for his brutal honesty and scowl. I hadn’t planned for our online friendship to turn into something that kept me up at night—hours of chatting evolving into filthy webcam sessions.

But it did. And now I can’t stop thinking about him. In my mind, our real life meeting is perfect. We kiss, we fall into bed, and it’s love at first sight.

Except, like most things in my life, it doesn’t go as planned.

*Strong Signal is a standalone, full-length novel with no cliffhanger*

OUR THOUGHTS:

This story captures exactly what it’s like to connect with someone online. While I don’t know about it from a romantic perspective,  I did meet some of my closest friends online. At first it seems strange, kind of like an out-of-body experience. You have these ideas of who people are based on your very limited interaction and shared interests. For me, it was books. Many of the ladies I consider among the most important people in my life live around the country – around the world – and I owe it to Twitter parties celebrating our favorite books and authors for bringing us together. For Kai and Garrett, it’s video games and Kai’s famous stream channel that bring them together.  I will say Garrett has an advantage, because at least the channel offers a glimpse of what Kai looks like. For most of us, it’s just profile pics and avatars and praying we’re not being catfishes. Wondering what Garrett sees? Check it out on Kai’s fan-created tumblr page.

I love the way Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell develop the connection between Kai and Garrett slowly but steadily, an easy attachment that seems safe. It would’ve been really easy for this to get creepy and stalkerish, but Strong Signal‘s dual POV gives us both sides which is key to keeping it on the level. We see that each guy’s in control of his involvement, and that’s exactly how the online world works.  Online relationships are precarious; they can become more, less or hold steady all depending on the perspective and desire of the end user. Kai and Garrett are in very different places with different needs – this interaction fills very individual voids for them. I find it interesting to watch them find common ground and work through all the phases of their unconventional relationship. Throw in some more common LGBT themes like coming out and homophobia, and it makes for a very complex, engaging story with a complete emotional spectrum and some hot, hot sexy times.  All I’m going to say is if you thought phone sex was hot, just wait.

While this is a standalone story, I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in the Cyberlove series, Fast Connection. I’m not going to lie, I found Dominic Costigan more than a bit annoying in the first book, but I’m hoping Erickson and Hassell can redeem him. No matter what, I’m certain they’ll make it an interesting ride.

OUR THOUGHTS:

Okay, I’m not going to lie. I started reading this book around 10 p.m. thinking I’d start it, read for a bit, get sleepy and put it down. That didn’t happen. I was completely hooked on these characters and drawn into the story despite the fact that I hadn’t read any of the Gamer’s series books that came before it. Megan Erickson does a phenomenal job of recapping in a way that doesn’t feel like an outright summary; the details are simply passed along as the story progresses. Honestly if I didn’t know there were other books, I may never have suspected.

Tied to Trouble is a sweet, sexy opposites attract kind of romance – the ultimate bad boy meets nerd love story. Chad’s all tall, dark and dangerous while Owen’s quiet, blond and brainy. It’s a perfect match and when they meet, the chemistry is off-the-charts hot. Erickson keeps the passion burning while building the sweetest connection, complete with gut-wrenching angst and tears of joy. I was so invested in these guys that I couldn’t put it down until we’d made it safely to the end. It’s quite a ride – one you don’t want to miss.
