Today we’re happy to host Nolan Clark, author of American Flyboy, at 3 Chicks After Dark! We’re excited to be part of the tour for his debut novel and learn a little about him as well. Our first tour date was fraught with technical issues so we’re trying this again! We appreciate Nolan’s patience and understanding. Now lets focus on American Flyboy!

Hi Nolan, thank you for taking the time to share with us. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

I was born in Biloxi, MS and educated at NC State University. I’m an American author who loves reading and writing gay romance/erotica set in historical backgrounds and spending time with my husband Jim, going for long walks in nature parks, dining out and taking in the occasional movie. I’ve been with my husband, Jim for almost sixteen years, and we were married two years ago, shortly have the US Supreme Court ruling allowing gay people to marry throughout the United States.

American Flyboy is my first book and it is a highly readable, erotic M/M romance set amidst the backdrop of World War II.

Could you give us a ‘to-do’ list for one of your characters?

Commandant Wilhelm Braun:
1-Keep resistance cells operating throughout Germany and German occupied Europe.
2-Avoid detection by the SS and the Gestapo.
3- Make Kenneth my very own flyboy.
4-Escape the Russian Army closing on the POW camp in Lamsdorf from the east.
5-Get Kenneth safely out of the POW camp in Lamsdorf.
6-Convince the Allies that a German commandant can be a good guy.
7-Start a new life with Kenneth in the US.

Thanks so much for being with us today, Nolan!

Excerpt:

Wilhelm whispered in soft breaths, “Raise your hands above your head, Kenneth.” Standing behind him, he pulled the grimy POW uniform top over his head and inhaled deeply. “I find your scent intoxicating.” It was unexpected, Wilhelm’s warm breath gently caressing the nape of his neck; Kenneth’s breath quickened. Loosening the silk blindfold, Wilhelm allowed the soft, smooth fabric to glide over Kenneth’s massive, broad shoulders tapering to a V-shaped torso and down his naked back.

Shuddering at the sleek sensations, Kenneth asked, “Are you trying to seduce me Wilhelm?”

In response, Wilhelm stepped closer and pressed his body into Kenneth’s. Wrapping his arms around his waist, Wilhelm kissed him innocently. “I’ve wanted to do that from the first day we met.”

Kenneth kissed him back softly, lingering. He felt safe and whole.

Coaxing Kenneth’s lips apart, Wilhelm’s tongue entered his mouth, tickling the sensitive palate with light flicks. Their lips crushed together with bruising kisses. Wilhelm broke away, gazing longingly into Kenneth’s eyes. “To answer your question, Kenneth, I am guilty of feeding a wounded POW a wonderful meal, relieving his pain with fine brandy, delighting him with romantic music and drawing him a hot relaxing bath of chamomile salts to soak away the stress of a bad day. Your glass is empty. Why don’t you finish undressing and ease into your bath while I get you another drink.” Wilhelm’s voice trailed off as he left the bathroom. “It’s baffling how you arrived at such an audacious conclusion as seduction.”

“My mistake,” Kenneth called after him, laughing to himself. He kicked off his dilapidated work shoes and pushed his boxers and grungy work pants down his long, muscular legs. Raking his strong fingers through the water, heightened the aroma of chamomile, and he inhaled the relaxing scent before slipping into the warm liquid heaven. His tired muscles released their tension as he submerged his body to the neck. Kenneth held his breath and slipped his head under. As he closed his eyes, his exhaustion seemed to float to the surface, and his thoughts drifted to Wilhelm, charming, handsome, tall and strong. His cock swelled to a full erection as he surfaced and rested his head against the back edge of the tub. Wiping the water from his eyes, he inhaled deeply and faded into sleep.

Blurb:

Jude Garrity visits the farmers market every Saturday. As an environmental engineering student, he’s curious about living off the grid and sustainable agriculture.

And one particular farmer.

Hudson Oliva has worked hard to support his commune, where queer people live without fear of harm or retribution. When Jude asks pointed questions about living there, Hudson realizes he needs to be honest about his home. Few people know what the farm is actually about, but Jude is insistent.

Jude moves to Kaleidoscope Gardens, however, his sexual hang-ups make it hard to adjust. He’s an uptight virgin living among people who have sex freely and with multiple partners. When Jude finally loosens up, Hudson is flooded with emotions. Falling for Jude wasn’t part of Hudson’s life plan. But when vindictive rumors about the commune begin to spread, love might be all he has left.

Excerpt:

“You wanted to know where I’m from,” Hudson said. Jude nodded but remained tight-lipped. “I grew up north of Miami in a small city. I couldn’t wait to get out, so I tried to hitch a ride to Seattle. Didn’t get that far.”

“How far did you get?” Jude looked surprised as he asked, so Hudson reached out and pressed his palm to the center of Jude’s chest.

“About five miles away. I’ve been here ever since.”

“What made you run? I mean… maybe that’s too personal.”

Hudson coasted his hand over the slight swell of Jude’s pec and thumbed over his nipple, which stood at attention, pert and flushed, like his lips and cheeks. It was a good color on him.

“My parents sent me away to one of those ‘pray away the gay’ places, which obviously didn’t work, but it probably saved my life since my mom had to haul Papi off me when she told him why I needed to go there. He had so much pride, and having a gay son wasn’t something he could live with. It was as if me being gay made him gay. I was accosted by religion and hatred for who I was from that day until I left, so I became an expert at being secretive and learned to lie through my teeth while living with them. My eighteenth birthday Papi and I fought, and I ended up with another black eye. I packed a bag and snuck out of the house while they were sleeping.”

“Did they call the cops or anything?”

Hudson shook his head and knew his smile was pathetic. He still held hope he and his father could reconcile. He knew Papi would be proud of him and what he’d accomplished on the commune. “I left a note and eventually let them know my address, but in all the years, I’ve gotten one letter.”

“I’ve talked to my parents twice since I left, and both times left me feeling shredded inside.”

“I’m sorry.” Hudson scooted closer and pulled Jude into a tight embrace. The feel of Jude’s warm skin against his own had Hudson’s body responding in no time flat. He kissed Jude’s neck and the sharp line of his jaw. He thrust his fingers into Jude’s spun-gold hair and drew their mouths together.

Jude moved his lips, pressing chaste kisses to Hudson’s, and then he snaked his arm between their bodies. Jude splayed his fingers across Hudson’s chest and pushed him away. He hung his head, looking down at the mattress in what appeared to be shame.

Hudson took the sting out of the rejection by thumbing over Jude’s bottom lip, shiny with saliva. “You have a delectable mouth, like it’s made for kissing.”

Jude laughed. “So do you.” Then he bit his lip and made brief eye contact before scooting back a few inches.

 Our thoughts:

The unique content is what attracted me to Farm Fresh, that and Posy Roberts always delivers a compelling story. With Farm Fresh, I was eager to delve into a topic I’ve never read before in a fiction romance, communal living.

Jude has been drifting since leaving home and attending college.  He’s fast tracking his degree so he can get to the best part, the practical application. He’s all about reducing his carbon footprint and looking at inventive, environmentally friendly uses for crop growth. That’s how he meets Hudson, at a farmers market. Hudson is beautiful and charismatic. He also sells organic produce from the farm he lives at, Kaleidoscope Gardens. After months of talking, Jude finally asks about Kaleidoscope Gardens and Hudson answers honestly. It’s a commune. Living off the land, producing what they need to survive and experiencing free love in an open and accepting environment.

Jude is all about the idea of the commune, he just has a lot of baggage from his past. His parents were strong in their religious beliefs and that led to some extreme practices towards sex and masturbation. Living in a sexually free place should be liberating for Jude, as he hoped it would be, but it’s anything but.

All the people were so open and enlightening. I loved that aspect of the story. Molly, Freya, Leo and Charlie were phenomenal secondary characters that enriched the story and Jude’s experience at Kaleidoscope Gardens from the beginning. What surprised me was the turn Hudson took throughout the book. He starts off so nice and happy but he’s far from that after Jude’s arrival. The anger became a bit consuming before it was worked out. Again,  Leo, Molly and Freya were sharing words of wisdom and trying to help Hudson and Jude through this tough place.

Overall, I liked the book because is was so different from anything I’ve read. It made me look at communal living in a brighter perspective. Most conjure images of crazy, self-absorbed gurus with a suicide pact waiting in the wings. This commune was on the opposite end of that spectrum. I also enjoyed the natural way the members lived. Reducing their carbon footprint and just being pure and loving. That would be a refreshing way to live…. and love.

Excerpt:

“On your knees, Allerix. There’s to be no screaming here at Domina’s estate, not with Avia sleeping down the hall from my guest room. Will you be able to stifle your cries?”

Alle looked up and swallowed. “You’d better gag me, sir.”

Gaius laughed. “Wise answer. I intend to spank your fit bum until your fucking toes tingle. And once I’ve slapped your arse scarlet hot, I’ll introduce you to a most wicked device I’ve brought from the playroom. Do you have any idea how much I love watching a boy squirm in ecstatic frustration, how much I enjoy denying him his exquisite release?”

Alle exhaled loudly but said nothing.

“That was a direct fucking question, Alle.”

“Yes, Dominus.”

“If I’m satisfied with your obedience, I’ll impale your tight heat until my thick, noble cream spills out of your arse and drips down your long, furry legs. And if you beg sweetly, I might suck your gorgeous cock until you come so hard those beautiful eyes of yours roll back in your fucking skull.”
