As above, so below, except when referring to the underground Refuge Inc. compound.

A century after an asteroid impact and merely fifteen years after a second collision that turned the world into a noxious wasteland, Cadet Connor Nichols and other Refuge facility residents are making the most of their spherical underground utopia they call home.

But when a breach threatens to poison the occupants with toxic air, Connor is forced to make life-altering decisions in an attempt to save lives and his only home. With help from best friend and training partner, Vince Moore, he’s reminded that good leadership requires responsibility.

His struggle intensifies as everything he knows about the facility, the leaders, and himself becomes twisted, distorted, and turned into the unimaginable when his efforts exposes shocking secrets that threaten their future.

Our Thoughts:

Darkness Eternal is a dystopian, science fiction story about a group of people living underground in a sphere. A big event forced them into this pod of life with its multiple levels.

Unfortunately, their leader started to feel the need to be the ultimate decision maker in everything. Anyone who disagreed with him would be sent on missions sure to result in death. He was selective in his choices for who entered the sphere from the beginning. No couples could conceive and the young were raised in the manner that Dr. Randolph felt best served his purpose.

It isn’t until two cadets, Vince and Connor, that Dr. Randolph’s  perfect society begins to falter. One fated mission put them on the path of truth. Randolph, Vince’s dad, has been manipulating everyone and left hundreds to die. Now the two cadets and the people left behind must do what they can to stop the course Randolph has set into motion. All before he collapses the whole sphere that provides their safety and every need.

The suspenseful element was written really well. We don’t know how things will proceed or turn out. It’s like we’re stepping through everything right alongside Connor. His descriptions are vivid and his thoughts are clear. Connor is a bit naïve because of the way he was raised and manipulated. I felt this brought a lot of interest to the story. It’s like we’re all experiencing what is happening at the same time as Connor. Only a few really know the truth and they’ve been exiled. Now, transparency is real.

Vince was a strong man. His feelings for Connor had been suppressed by his father and their societies silly rules against same-sex relationships. Seeing these two fight their urges and then eventually give in was sweet and a nice side to the main action. Tamara, their friend and fellow cadet, brought a great attitude and a sharp tongue. She was the perfect relief at the right moment. Whether it was words or wisdom, sass or concern she was always there with perfect timing and her loyalty was strong.

Overall, the world building was just right for this story. Just enough to know what was going on, but not an information dump. I found this to be an interesting story of survival, hope, and potential for a better world.
