Moscow,

February
Four years ago

Ominous dark gray clouds rolled in. Snow came down as small ice pellets that cut like glass shards on the skin. They swirled around the mourners as they stood over the twin coffins. A northeast wind blew over the loup garou cemetery outside of Moscow. It cut through the thickest coats and scarves. Alexei Davidoff shivered in his beaver coat and hat. His Enforcers lowered the bodies of his former Chief Beta and his Beta’s Mate into the ground. Newly joined, they were dead for the crime of being gay and holding hands in a public square in Moscow.

“This cannot stand. There has to be an answer to this, someone has to stand up against these thugs.” Alexei moved his platinum hair off his face. His navy blue eyes flashed both anguish and resolve.

“The perpetrators were human, one of the government’s army of gay bashers, Alpha. There is nothing we can do. We cannot harm a human, and the government gives us no recourse to law.” The Beta shook his head.

“When is the next protest?” Alexei paced across the icy ground in front of the graves.

“Tomorrow at noon, in the square,” Vasily Yudin, Alexei’s new Chief Beta said reluctantly.

“I will be there.” Alexei watched Vasily’s expression. His body folded in on itself in resignation. Alexei knew Vasily realized it was useless to argue. He saw that his Alpha had made up his mind. Alexei could tell his Betas were scheming to mitigate the damage.

“We’ll go with you, Alpha.” Vasily gestured to Grigory and the six Enforcers in the funeral party.

“No, I will go alone.” Alexei clenched his fists and set his jaw in defiance.

“Alpha, it’s dangerous. We can’t let you go alone. If the FSB picks you up, there is no guarantee that the council will be able to negotiate your release. Please, both Grigory and I think you should let us and the Enforcers go with you, or you should stay at home. The FSB under the current president is worse than the KGB that preceded them. Peter and Sasha wouldn’t have wanted you to put yourself in danger. There is no helping them now.”

“I cannot let this go unanswered, Vasily. The man who did this wasn’t even arrested despite the fact that I reported the assault. I must protest to the authorities. We have an obligation to try to right this wrong. He was one of mine, one of my household, my personal staff. I am responsible.”

“But, Alpha, we can’t let you go alone into a dangerous situation,” Grigory persisted. “We would be shirking our duty as your Betas if we let you go alone.”

Alexei Ivanovich Davidoff straightened his spine and spat. “I will lose no one else to the government. As your Alpha, I am ordering you to stay away.”

“Alpha,” Vasily got on his knees in supplication.

Alexei put up his hand to silence his Beta. “I will hear no more of this. I will lead the demonstration tomorrow.”

Vasily and Grigory hung their heads in defeat.

March

Three Years Later

“I don’t think I can make it,” Alexei said as he attempted to walk out the front gate of the gulag to the waiting car.

“Let Grigory and I help to hold you up.” Vasily and Grigory each put an arm under one of his shoulders and half-walked, half-carried him to the car.

They strapped him in the back and Grigory spent the twelve hours it took to get to the dacha trying to hold his Alpha up so he wouldn’t fall where he sat.

When Vasily and Grigory finally got him into the dacha, Vasily’s mouth hung open in shock when he took off his Alpha’s coat. Their six foot six, two-hundred-pound Alpha weighed less than one hundred forty pounds.

“What did they do to you?” Vasily asked, tears pouring down his face.

“I was caged most of the time I spent in the gulag. They tortured, beat, and defiled me daily, all because I’m gay and dared to report Sasha’s and Peter’s deaths, and point to who was responsible.”

“They call it prison now, Alpha.”

Alexei sighed wearily, “In modern Russia, they call it a prison. But I’ve been alive long enough to remember Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev’s slave labor camps. They can change the name but it’s still the gulag to me.”

“Alpha, you need to make the change. It will erase your scars and after you’ve changed a number of times, your injuries. It will take a while. Your injuries are severe.” Grigory helped Alexei into a roughhewn chair.

“I can’t change. I don’t have the strength.” Alexei put his head in his hands.

“Katya, Boris, something to eat for the Alpha, right away.” Katya ran to the kitchen and brought back some borscht.

“Finish this, Alpha. You have to eat constantly so your stomach can extend again.”

Grigory and Vasily knelt in front of their Alpha. Vasily spoke, “We’ve been pleading with the First for three years. The council finally negotiated your early release on the condition that you emigrate once you recover. We took the liberty of contacting Alpha Daurensbourg, from Saskatchewan and the Central US…”

“I am aware of Etienne Daurensbourg. He is a friend.”

“The council arranged for your emigration and that of your household. Alpha Daurensbourg will receive you in New York and already purchased a seven-floor townhouse and nine two-bedroom apartments for our people in New York City. Grigory, I, and our Enforcers will emigrate with you along with Boris and Katya.”

“But I have no funds, and you have families here. There I will no longer be an Alpha. I won’t be able to care for you.”

“You are our Alpha,” Vasily said with a stubbornness he had not shown to Alexei before. Alexei narrowed his eyes.

Alexei didn’t fight the emigration, only their participation. Vasily continued, “That’s the beauty of this course of action. Alpha La Farge, who was the North America’s Second, is no longer an Alpha. He is an Omega scrubbing Siberian toilets and can’t make the change. They sent him here eighteen months ago to die in disgrace for kidnapping The Alpha Mate. You have blood right to his territory in Colorado. Alpha La Marche has it now. I know he finds the packs fractious because he has no blood tie and they want one of their own. I’ve made inquiries. He’ll give it to you and you can become Second in North America.”

“I don’t want to be Second, Third, or Fourth for that matter. I can’t save the world. I learned that lesson the hard way. I will see my old friend Etienne Daurensbourg and maybe he can help me find a place to go. I have no funds…”

“Excuse me for the interruption, Alpha, but you do,” Vasily said with some satisfaction.

“As your factotum, Boris handled your funds. He put all of your accounts overseas as soon as the government started its campaign against homosexuals, only leaving enough rubles in Russia for operating expenses. As soon as they arrested you, he liquidated the rest of your investments and wired the funds to our London banker who in turn, had them sent them to The North American Alpha for safekeeping. Alpha La Marche reinvested everything. The American Stock Market has done very well. You are worth ten times what you were before and it’s all protected from the Russian government.”

“We bought first-class tickets to New York flying Air France on a nonstop flight to JFK where Alpha Daurensbourg will meet our party. Alpha Daurensbourg would have sent his jet, but the Russian government refused entry. However, Alpha Daurensbourg obtained green cards for the whole household. It’s all arranged for as soon as you are able to travel,” Grigory added.

It took until November for Alexei to regain his health and put on enough weight to have the strength to make the change that would take away the scars from the constant whippings. He still had some internal bruising that would only go away with time. Alexei needed rest, food, and a place to recover. But, even many transformations couldn’t take away the psychological damage the gulag caused, the malaise of the soul. For that, Vasily thought his Alpha needed a miracle. As soon as Alexei could bring out his wolf, Vasily and Grigory had their Alpha and his party on a plane to America. It was right before Yule.

At Alpha Daurensbourg’s urging, Armand La Marche, the Chief Alpha of North America, gave Alpha Alexei Ivanovich Davidoff the territory of Colorado and a seat as Fifth on the Loup Garou Council of North America.

“You were Second in Russia, Fifth is an insult,” Vasily complained.

“No, it’s not. I’m grateful. I’m tired of tilting at Russian windmills. I need time to gather my strength and clear my mind. I have a place waiting for me at Garou as the officer in charge of Research and Development once I’ve fully regained my health.”

“You’re entitled to…” Grigory sputtered.

“I’m entitled to nothing. I was born in Russia. My mother was a citizen of the United States. She never filed for American citizenship for me when I was born. It was too long ago. I’d have to forge papers and with my accent, they would know I’m Russian which in the current climate, is not a good thing. I have a green card. I can become an American. For once, I’m going to be able to do the job I trained for. I have degrees in three kinds of sciences. Research and Development is where I belong.” Alexei sighed. “I don’t want anything else.”

“Your status…”

“If you are upset about the reduction in my status, go work for the new Russian Second.” Alexei’s face turned hard.

Vasily bowed his head in supplication baring his neck. “No, Alpha, we’re yours. Whatever you decide to do, we will go with you. I just wanted you to have options.”

“I’m taking an option. I’ll be Fifth and grateful for the consideration. I’ll leave the politics to Armand. Obviously, he’s better at it than we are. Although there has been some resentment, miraculously gay bashing is now a hate crime in the United States, against federal law, and gay marriage has become legal.”

We’re thrilled to host a tour spot for Lisa Oliver’s newest release, The Artist and His Alpha. Lisa has graciously taken time away from her fabulous writing to answer a few questions for us. Enjoy the interview and the heart pumping excerpt!

Which of your characters gave you the hardest time about not following your initial plans?

Funnily enough, it was Caden in The Artist and His Alpha. When I saw the picture of Caden I thought he was this sassy mouthed little sneak who would really give his Alpha a run for his money. But it didn’t happen. When I sat down to write him, it turns out he was hiding from the world and was a virgin. I have learned not to go against what my characters tell me, and just write them the way they come across.

What is the strangest job you ever had and have you used it in a book?

I have had a lot of jobs, and I don’t consider any of them strange, but I do use the times I worked behind a bar quite often in my books. I was also a night shift taxi driver for two years and some of the stories and things I saw then leach out into my books sometimes.

How obsessive are you about small factual details in your stories? ie. do you research which side the gas tank is on in your hero’s car of choice, before you have him fill it up…?

Not quite that obsessive, no, but I do check details – bikes, cars, styles of houses. In a recent book I was writing about bear shifters and I went online to find a honey based soda drink, because he doesn’t drink alcohol.

What is the nicest thing ever said about your work in a review?

I often get readers who tell me that they were “just going to read a couple of chapters,” and then sat up until the early hours of the morning finishing a book. I also had one lady tell me her husband had to go out and get takeout for dinner for their kids, because she was reading my book and she couldn’t put it down. I know what that feeling is like from reading other people’s books, and it always makes my feet twitch when I know someone feels that way about mine.

If you had all the time and really informed beta readers to help you get it right, what characters or genre would you like to write that you haven’t quite tackled yet?

I think I would write an M/M paranormal historical romance. I have a personal fascination with British history, especially around the Victorian or Tudor times, but the amount of detail I would need to know would be staggering, and would probably interfere with the storyline if I tried to do it. It would be nice though, to give it a try.

Thanks for being with us Lisa! We enjoyed having you and loved your candid answers.

Blurb:

It’s a far cry from life on the streets and Caden is determined to keep working hard, and stay out of the spotlight. Staying away from all things wolf is easy enough in the city, until he meets the one man with the potential to blow his cover and his way of life, out of the water.

Sean Black has it all – a brother for pack, a home pack that is still supportive but far enough away not to interfere with his daily life, a good business, and men who clamor for his attention every night of the week. The last thing he wants or needs is a mate, but after a brief meeting with a gorgeous artist, he realizes his life will change, and not necessarily in a good way.

A misunderstanding leads to danger for Caden and Sean has to make a choice. Can he give his Omega what he needs, or should he make sure he’s protected and then walk away? A rogue Alpha with an agenda of his own, a trap, and trouble from the council are just a few of the things this couple will have to contend with if they are ever to have their HEA.

Excerpt:

“Holy shit, he has a gun. Caden, for fuck’s sake don’t shoot!”

Sean heard Felix yell and he damn near pushed Liam off the fire escape, leaping up the last of the stairs. He could understand how Felix would want to talk quickly, especially if a gun was involved, but he had to see Caden for himself. As he stood on a rickety ledge he was momentarily stunned by the vision in front of him. A huge lit space littered with canvases spoke of hard work, dedication, passion for art and an apparent disregard for mess. And in front of it all stood Caden – locked, loaded and ready for bear.

The young man looked even better than Sean remembered. His slim, pale torso gleamed under the light, his unruly mop of straight blond hair falling just over the top of one eye. All Caden appeared to be wearing was a pair of jeans that hung low on his hips – a truly sexy picture. But it was the confident way Caden held the gun in his hands, and the unflinching glare in his eyes, that touched Sean’s heart. Felix had been right about one thing. Caden was determined to defend his home, and he looked more than capable of doing it. Damn, if that idea didn’t slam Sean in the groin and hang on.

“What are you doing here, Felix?” Caden’s voice held traces of nervousness that wouldn’t be noticed by human ears, but Sean noticed that the hands holding the gun didn’t waver.

“I was worried about you,” Felix called out, stepping closer to the glass, his hands spread to show he was unarmed. “We all were. You wouldn’t answer your door; you weren’t taking my calls. I had to know you were all right. We’re friends, Caden, I thought you trusted me. Now please, let us in. This damn ledge is fucking unsafe and you know I’m scared of heights.”

Caden held his glare for a long minute, and Sean wasn’t sure the young man would ever move. But then he carefully raised his weapon, removed the magazine, which he tucked in his back pocket, and then walked over to rest the gun against the wall. Only then did he come towards the large panes of glass, releasing a latch, which Sean realized was actually a door latch. What he had mistaken for windows doubled as large sliding doors.

Once all three men were inside of what was a huge space, Caden seemed unsure of himself. “I know we’re friends,” he said to Felix hesitantly – scared, but apparently determined to defend his actions. “I’m not doing anything wrong.” His eyes seemed to catch Sean’s automatically and Sean was shocked to see they were full of fear again. “I’m an adult. This is my place, my territory. I’m not intruding on anyone’s space. I have a right to be here.”

Sean realized in that instant that Caden’s immediate fear had a name – the Black Brothers – and damn, if that didn’t make him feel sick. He and Liam were full-blown Alpha wolves, and his little Omega must have thought that they had a pack, or at least a right to the territory he lived in. No wonder the poor guy had locked himself in and refused to talk to anyone. He was terrified of losing his home and possibly his life.

Felix looked confused. “No one said you didn’t have any right to be here. This is your home, bought and paid for. No one can take it away from you so long as you pay your taxes, and your trust does that for you.”

“Then why did you bring them?” Caden hadn’t stopped looking at Sean, but clearly Liam was included in the ‘them’ comment as well. “They know what I’m talking about. Why are they here, if not to beat me, torture me, rape me and then kick me out of my home? That’s what men like them do. What are they doing here?”

Our Thoughts:

Sigh. I love the Alpha and Omega dynamic in paranormal romance books. Lisa Oliver delivers a tasty morsel with this take on the relationship dynamic between and alpha and an Omega.Plus, we get fated mates, power struggles and a nervous, lone wolf Omega!

Sean goes to an art show with his brother, grudgingly. He’s rather be anywhere else, but Liam insists on trying to get this specific artist to do a mural for their club. Something about his wolf paintings being the most realistic he’s ever seen. When Sean sees the small, cute blond that is the artist, he’s instantly attracted to the man. One handshake, a sniff of the man’s scent and he is head over heel because that awkward in public blond man is his mate and an Omega wolf to boot!

Caden knows he’s in trouble and asks his friend Felix to take him away from the art show as fast as he can. The man he met is an Alpha and nothing good will come of this Alpha meeting Caden. All Alphas from his past have ever done is abuse, ridicule and take his possessions. Caden is literally fearing for his life after meeting Sean.

So begins the push for Sean to move into Caden’s life and make him his Fated mate for ever and always. Caden comes from a pack that never followed pack law. A rogue wolf that was evil and abusive. Caden has no idea what it is like to be in a true pack. One that values its members but also treasures Omega wolves. Sean has to win over a reclusive, abused wolf, and show him what it means to be loved, valued and treated as an equal.

Along the way Sean makes many mistakes. His bravado gets in the way multiple times. He’s not used to being the pursuer. Usually men fall over him and beg him for attention. Caden is so far from that. Once Caden comes out of his shell, he’s not going to stand by and let other men try to move in on his man. On the flip slide, he’s still not sure of himself and doubts how much Sean loves him and if he’ll be enough.

I enjoyed the ebb and flow between Sean and Caden. They were hot and cold throughout the story. Caden had so much to fear and tried hard to have faith in Sean, but with them being such a new couple, that was hard to do. When Caden’s past threatens their happiness, they flounder again. Sean flounders the most. He makes many mistakes, but his brother and dad are there to help him realize how much a fool he is each time.

I found this to be a sweet story! Sean isn’t too hardcore Alpha. He’s pretty likeable even if he was a manwhore before Caden! Caden is sweet and broken yet stronger than he realizes. Together they were sensual, caring and sassy.

Synopsis

Graham’s had it with Alphas. His experiences with them have been disastrous at best. Even with ones that didn’t tumble him into the nearest bed. So when the chance to move in with another Omega comes up, Graham grabs it. But Graham’s never seen an Omega so big. Plus, he seems to be able to push buttons only an Alpha has. However, trust is something that comes easily to Graham. Hyden says nothing about being an Alpha – so he must not be. Right?

Hyden has just met his fated mate – in the middle of a territorial war. Not the best timing. But now that Graham’s here, Hyden can hardly let the little pup escape, which is what he will do if he finds out Hyden is not only an Alpha but the Alpha. With the Mating Moon scant days away how will Hyden convince the smaller Graham that not all Alphas are selfish bastards? And he’s going to have to, because blood fever will not be ignored and Hyden can already feel it taking over his senses. Once it does, there will be no turning back. Hyden might have to resort to handcuffing the pup in order to make sure he doesn’t bolt off into the night. Hmmm. Not a bad thought. He might have to do that anyway…

Excerpt

Stupid, clueless little pup. Hyden pushed away from the door he had just closed, leaving Graham behind, and forced himself to walk into the living room. If he didn’t, he was sure he would slam that door back open, rip those boxers off the man, and take him right there on the cold hardwood floor.

Why now? Why did his fated mate have to show up now? Fuck, the smell of the man. He had never before experienced anything like it. And for the pup to be ignorant of Hyden’s Alpha status was absolutely crazy. But Hyden knew, due to the strong scent of terror rolling off the smaller man when he had even spoken the word Alpha, his mate would bolt if he learned that Hyden was indeed not only an Alpha but the Alpha.

The Solfang Pack was the dominant pack in the city, and it was odd Graham hadn’t heard of it. And the last thing Hyden was capable of doing was outright lying to his fated mate. He could, and was going to have to, hide some of the truth. But lying was not something he was going to want to do. Even now, with the subterfuge he was planning, he was skating on ground that would have him in high water to his eyebrows with one false step.

The timing of this sucked. He was just now moving into supreme power, and to be sidetracked by a naïve little pup was definitely going to be a problem. But he sure as hell wasn’t going to be able to let Graham slip away from him either. Hyden wasn’t the one who placed the ad in the paper, but if Graham needed to rent a room, he would rent it from him. And if Graham needed to believe Hyden was an Omega, then that’s what Hyden was going to have to be for a while. At least until he could convince the pup they were mates.

Except it was a little over two weeks to the Mating Moon.

Was that going to be enough time for him to get Graham to understand what was happening? Because he would not be able to hold back when that moon hit. He was barely able to keep his wolf at bay the way it was. Snapping and growling at him already, his animal was clawing to get out and at the pup.

He heard a noise behind him, and he turned.

There he was. Beautiful and innocent. Maybe not virginal. That was fine. But he was in no way going to allow Graham to be physical with anyone else from now on. “Feeling better?” The sweatpants and top he had given the man were very obviously too big. They belonged to his sister, who was no small thing herself.

“Yes. Thank you.”

He had pushed up the sleeves and rolled up the pant legs. He looked absolutely adorable.

And fuckable.

Hyden wanted to touch the hot skin beneath that fabric.

But he would have to wait. Shit. The beautiful man was talking to him, and he’d missed it.

“I’m sorry, Graham. What did you say?”

“I asked… what… what is the price? I think the paper was wrong. I think it was a typo or something because…”

“Come. Let’s sit down.” It would be easier for him to hide his reaction to this man if they sat. Hyden walked over to one of the white couches. He truly desired for Graham to sit at his feet, to keep him near, and almost commanded him to do so but was able to keep his mouth shut. The gorgeous man sat opposite him on the other couch. Damn it. So far away.

Oh, he was so timid. He sat perched at the end, looking ready to run at the slightest thing. Did he suspect? He should. How Hyden was going to keep from Graham what he was, he wasn’t sure, but at the very least, he was going to have to hide his extreme attraction. And his overpowering need to command the man to bend over for him. Right now.

He swallowed hard. Keep on task, or you will lose him. “What did the ad say?”

“It said two hundred dollars a month. But I know that can’t be right.”

“Two hundred a month is fine.”

“What? But…”

“Two hundred a month is the price. Do you want it?”

“Oh yes! Yes, please.”

Damn. The word please coming from those lips… Lips Hyden wanted wrapped around his cock. “Good. When can we move you in?”

“Today? Is today too soon?”

Today. Relief swept through Hyden. He would soon have the pup under his roof and his protection. No mistakes. He could make no mistakes. “No. Not at all. Where is your stuff?”

“In Tenway Park. In the Mercury building. I live on the tenth floor. It’s… not like this. I don’t know if you know anything about Tenway Park. I – it’s kind of slummy.”

Tenway Park. Damn. It totally figured he would be coming from the inner city. The wolves in that district rejected any kind of pack authority, had long ago abolished packs altogether. He understood the payoffs. Alphas running amok with no self-discipline, fucking everything in their path, not to mention the fact crime was a way of life. The only rule: don’t get caught. And even then, if you had money and power, getting caught simply meant you gained more influence and notoriety. Having to submit to a pack would stop all such behavior. Hyden’s Betas had been slowly infiltrating the area and bringing back much needed information. At some point, Hyden would take over the zone, and he needed to know who were going to be the ones he would have to defeat in order to do it. Just the knowledge that this was where his Graham had been living made him shiver.

Oh, she doesn’t mind “real life” and she does try to at least keep it in mind when she writes her stories, but she truly loves creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every – single – time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason she loves reading this genre, too. Give her a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and her computer, whether she is reading or writing, and she will entertain herself for hours. The fact she actually gets paid to do it is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.

Publisher: Hurri Cosmo

Release Date: February 9, 2016

Length: 28,000 words

Blurb:

Our thoughts:

I was impressed with the length of this free story. Usually free books are short stories thirty pages or less. Hyden’s Law is setting up a world that I’d definitely enjoy reading more about!

Hyden is a Supreme Alpha trying to bring back pack law and rule to a greatly deprived area. One in great upheaval and distress. Alphas warring and killing. No rules, no control. That’s the inner city works, but Hyden Solfang controls the outlining areas. His pack oversees some 1200 pack members and their safety. While trying to work toward bringing a more peaceful existence and pack rule back to the out of control areas, Graham arrives on Hyden’s doorstep, literally.

Graham Taylor is an Omega who’s been mistreated, abused and discarded over and over again. The Alphas he’s been in contact with were not part of any pack and they abused their influence over Graham. As an Omega he’s too eager to please and that’s set him up to be used. Now, he’s untrusting of an Alphas and thinks Hyden is an Omega seeking a roommate.

The pretense under which they meet is upheld until Graham can no longer deny his attraction and Hyden can longer hold off claiming Graham.

Aside from the initial false pretenses by which Graham comes to live with Hyden. There’s no denying that they are destined Mates. Hyden needs to want Graham’s trust, claim him, and bring him fully into the pack. It’s everything Graham could ever want. He wants to submit to Hyden, not just in the bedroom but in all aspects. He wants to be cherished and protected. Poor Graham was so innocent with his trust in the past and unfortunately his mistreatment means Hyden has his work cut out for him.

They’re very passionate in the bedroom and rough in the playroom. As they grow to bond, more information is shared about who Hyden truly is and what Graham’s role beside him will be.

I would say we’re not left with a cliffhanger, more a bit of an open ending. I hope we have a lot more to experience with Hyden and Graham as they finalize their mating bond, potentially have a family and build onto the existing Solfang pack. So. Much. More! However, the ending is satisfying regardless of whether we see more from the Solfang Pack.
